Early life and education
Carmen Cárdenas was born in Pacoima, Los Angeles, on March 31, 1963. He is one of 11 children of Andrés Cárdenas and Mara Quezada, who immigrated to the United States right after marrying in Jalisco, Mexico, in 1946. Andrés Cárdenas was a farm worker near Stockton, California, until the family moved to Pacoima in 1954.
Cárdenas graduated from San Fernando High School in the northeast San Fernando Valley. He obtained a bachelor of arts degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1986.
Personal life
Luis J. Rodriguez, the Chicano literature writer, is Cárdenas' brother-in-law.
Cárdenas identifies himself as the subject of a lawsuit brought in Los Angeles County alleging sexual assault of a minor in 2007. The lawsuit alleged that a (then unidentified) local politician drugged a 16-year-old girl at the Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles and then sexually molested her as she fled from the ambulance room after she passed out, although there is no evidence linking him to such charges. Cárdenas released a statement in response to the allegations, saying they were "100 percent untrue."
Angela Chavez, the woman who brought the charges against Cárdenas, has dropped the case on July 3, 2019. Gus Villelala's father, who ran against Cárdenas in 2016, was also mentioned, promising to post negative information about Cárdenas in exchange for a volunteer position with Alarcon's congressional campaign. Alarcon said he refused to recruit Villela and reported the meeting to the FBI, according to Alarcon. The lawsuit was settled as a settlement, not a compromise, with prejudice, meaning that the complaint cannot be dismissed, not a trial.
