Tommy Fleming (born 15 May 1971) is an Irish singer.
He rose to fame in the early 1990s after he was asked to tour the US with Phil Coulter.
He soon established himself as a solo artist and found his greatest success singing traditional Irish music, both old and contemporary.
Fleming has toured extensively throughout Ireland, UK, United States, the Netherlands and Australia.
When Fleming was asked how he would describe his genre of music he confessed that it is not opera nor rock 'n' roll.
He said that he is just "very traditional and likes a song with a good story".
When he is touring, he is accompanied by David Hayes, who plays piano and keyboard.
Hayes produces Fleming's albums and is the musical director of his shows.
Personal life
Tommy Fleming is currently living in Mayo with his wife, Tina. He met her at a funeral two days after a tour in the late 1990s. This was soon after the accident Fleming was involved in where he crashed his car and broke his neck. Fleming has described Tina as "a great woman very strong and a great organiser".
Career
When Fleming was asked how he would describe his genre of music, he replied that it is neither opera nor rock 'n' roll. He said he is "very conventional and likes a song with a good tale." When he's touring, David Hayes, a keyboardist and pianist, will accompany him. Hayes is a producer who produces Fleming's albums as well as the musical director of his performances. After leaving De Dannan, "Dangerous Side of Life," Fleming's first solo venture was released in 1996.
Fleming first published Restless Spirit in 1998. He was almost killed in a car accident returning to his native Sligo in early 1998, while on the tour for this album. He escaped from the wretched car with a fractured neck, putting his future in jeopardy. He had been wearing a cranial halo for three months. Fleming was told that he might not be able to walk again after this incident. Tina, his wife, was the one who rescued Fleming at the time. "She took over my leadership and led me in the right direction," Fleming said.
Restless Spirit and Sand & Water were two albums that followed. The Contender brought Fleming back to traditional Irish music's roots. His first tour of Japan would follow the success of his albums in 2000 and 2001.
Fleming performed a concert at Knock Shrine Basilica in Knock, County Mayo, on December 12, 2004. This building has a capacity of 5,000 people and was hosted by Pope John Paul II on his visit to Ireland in September 1979. This was the first time a concert of its kind was held in the city. In August 2005, PBS began airing the recording of the concert under the name Voice of Hope in the United States. Voice of Hope was his first album to be released in North America.
Fleming's first studio album in three years, A Life Like Mine, was released in 2006. It featured songs that Fleming had been wanting to hear for some time, including Jimmy MacCarthy's "Mystic Lipstick" and Phil Coulter's "Scorn Not His Simplicity." The album debuted at number five in the Album charts for the first time.
Fleming's latest live show, A Journey Home, was broadcast at the National Events Centre in Killarney, to a 2,000 audience. It was released on CD and DVD in 2008 and features 22 songs from Ireland's most popular and well-known writers and poets. "The Cliffs of Dooneen," "Isle of Innisfree," the film's theme, Dick Farnham), and "Isle of Tears" are among the attractions on a Journey Home.
Fleming was asked in an interview what would be next for him after his book A Journey Home's debut. In addition to writing an autobiography, he said he'll be working on his next studio album.
He was an active participant in season 4 of Celebrity Baisteroir in 2011, he was president of St Patrick's GAA Club Dromard, Sligo.
Fleming was on board for the inaugural cruise of the Australian performing arts on the MS Radiance of the Seas in November 2014, alongside Cheryl Barker, David Hobson, Colin Lane, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Simon Tedeschi, Elaine Paige, Marina Priorita, and Jonathon Welch.
