Career
Hansard left school at the age of 13 to start busking on Dublin streets. In 1990, he formed his own band The Frames, and the band has been playing regularly in Ireland. Outspan Foster, a guitarist from 1991 Alan Parker's film The Commitments, brought him to international prominence. He has often stated that he regretted taking the position because it distracted him from his music career. On RTÉ, he hosted Other Voices: Songs from a Room, which showcased Irish music talent.
Bertrand Galen from France on April 22, 2006, he released his first album without The Frames, The Swell Season, on Overcoat Recordings in collaboration with Czech singer and multi-instrumentalist Markéta Irglová, on violin and viola, and Bertrand Galen from Finland on cello. Hansard appeared on several occasions in front of the cameras on the Irish film Once, which also stars Hansard as a Dublin busker and Irglová an immigrant street vendor. In 2007, the film made its United States premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the United States and received the Festival's World Cinema Audience Award. He and Irglová began dating during the promotional tour. "I had been falling in love with her for a long time, but I kept telling myself she's just a kid." In 2007, Hansard produced a version of Bob Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" for the film I'm Not There. Hansard said in 2009 that he and Irglova are no longer romantically linked, and that they are now "good friends."
Hansard participated in the 2006 Oxfam charity album, The Cake Sale, in addition to his works with The Frames and Irglová. For the Today FM albums Even Better Than The Real Thing, Hansard has recorded several cover songs, both solo and with bandmate Colm Mac Con Iomaire. Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River" on Even Better Than the Real Thing Vol. 2 are among his songs that he has performed. "Everytime" on Vol. 1 and Britney Spears' "Everytime." 2.
As an Irish busker, he appeared in an episode ("In the Name of the Grandfather") on The Simpsons. On the ANTI-record label, a new album of original songs named The Swell Season with Markéta Irglová and Strict Joy was released on October 27, 2009.
Eddie Vedder appeared on his American solo tour in support of Vedder's solo album, Ukulele Songs, in the summer of 2011. In May 2011, he appeared in a solo concert at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Guitar Heroes exhibition in New York City and on Cape Cod at the Cape Cinema on June 17.
He appeared at the Alpine Valley Theatre outside of East Troy, Wisconsin, at the 20th Anniversary Festival PJ20 in September 2011. Hansard plays various guitars, including a very recognisable battered Takamine NP15 acoustic guitar (also sporting a large hole) and his own "The Horse."

On the soundtrack for the 2012 film The Hunger Games, Hansard performed "Take the Heartland." "Come Away to the Sea," He wrote, is included on the soundtrack, but Maroon 5 and Rozzi Crane cover it. On the deluxe version of his first solo album Rhythm and Repose, Hansard can be found singing "Come Away to the Sea." He appeared in an episode of the television series Parenthood in which he played himself. He performed "High Hope" in the episode "Trouble in Candyland," a single from his solo debut album Rhythm and Repose. Hansard and Lisa Hannigan recorded "On Love" for the soundtrack to Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet in 2014. In December 2018, Hansard sang Coyote at the Joni Mitchell 75th birthday celebration in Los Angeles.
