In a recent film, Kaepernick's predecessor, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, discusses the national anthem controversy

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 3, 2023
Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf was two decades before Colin Kaepernick took a knee and 28 years after John Carlos and Tommie Smith raised their fists 28 years ago. Chris Jackson, the athletic LSU guard who overcame Tourette syndrome to become one of the country's top scorers, is now known as one of the most polarizing figures in sports history. Abdul-Rauf, a former NBA rookie with the Denver Nuggets in 1991, sparked pulses when he changed his name in 1993, and pleaded no nonsense against the National Anthem in 1996. Despite his success as one of the league's best shooters, Abdul-Rauf will be out of the NBA in a few seasons. His Mississippi home was razed to the ground in 2001. Arson was found by police, but no one was charged. Abdul-Rauf, a 53-year-old man, says he would have done it better, but he has no regrets about his demonstrations or his condemnation of the US as a sign of oppression.
