Alexi Pappas Life

Alexi Pappas or Alexia Pappa (born 28 March 1990) is a Greek-American long distance athlete, filmmaker, actor, and writer.

As a long distance runner, Alexi has been most successful in the 10km, but has also been a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) All-American at indoor 3,000 metres, 5,000 metres, and the steeplechase as well as the Ivy League champion in the steeplechase.

In the 2016 Summer Olympics Women's 10km, Pappas represented Greece and set a national Greek record.

As a filmmaker, Alexi co-wrote and starred in Tracktown.

Early life and education

Pappas was born on 28 March 1990, to a Greek-American father who has roots from Rhodes and an American mother. She has a brother who is four years older. Pappas grew up in Alameda, California. Her mother died by suicide when Pappas was four years old.

Personal life

In 2020 Pappas published a video about her struggle with depression, calling for better care of elite athletes' mental health.

Athletic career

Pappas finished fourth in the Division III girls 5K race at the California Interscholastic Federation State Cross Country Championships in 2005 as a sophomore at Oakland's Bishop O'Dowd High School.

Even though boys at the same high school were encouraged to participate in multiple sports, Pappas' high school coach refused to allow her to participate in multiple sports, and said that it affected her physical growth.

Pappas was a two-time NCAA all-American at Dartmouth College. She was one of nine finalists for the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year award. She also qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene after winning the 2012 Ivy League crown in the steeplechase (9:58.80). In 2012, Pappas received a diploma in creative writing and English from Dartmouth College.

Pappas earned three NCAA Division I All-American awards while at the University of Oregon as a master's student. She came eighth individually at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships in 19:43.9 (6,000 meters), assisting the Oregon Ducks women's cross country team in winning the national championship. In 2013, she earned a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from Oregon.

Pappas became a Greek national treasure on January 8, 2016 and the 10,000 m Greek national record was set on May 1st, which had not existed since 2002. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she represented Greece. She set a new national record when she placed 17th in 31:36.16.

Lisa Thompson, a 2022 Boston Marathon runner who won the T13 (Visible Impairment) Division in a time of 3:47:25, was accompanied by Pappas as a mentor.
