Todd Mitchell Palin (born September 6, 1964) is an American oil field production operator, commercial fisherman, and was First Gentleman of Alaska from 2006 to 2009.
He is the husband of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, who is competing with John McCain for the 2008 Republican vice presidential nomination.
Early life and education
Palin was born and raised in Dillingham, Alaska, to James F. "Jim" and Blanche Palin (née Roberts). Palin has Yup'ik (from a great-grandmother), Dutch, and English roots.
Palin graduated from Wasilla High School in 1982, the same alma mater of his wife and their eldest two children, son Track and daughter Bristol. He has taken several college courses, but did not complete a degree.
Public life
Palin became eligible in 1989 when the first polls were first registered. He was registered to vote from October 1995 to July 2002, except for a few months in 2000. Palin had registered to vote as an independent (undeclared), and had never registered as a Republican, according to The Politico in late August 2008. Following a 2010 address to a national convention of the Tea Party in Nashville, Tennessee, Sarah's husband announced that he is not registered with any party both in her 2009 book, Going Rogue: An American Life, and in a Q&A session.
Palin was the first gentleman, or "first dude," as he was often described as such, for two and a half years, from 2006 to 2009. He encouraged young Alaskans who were unable to afford college to work in the oil and gas industry as an efficient preparation ground and urged the governor on workforce development issues for the natural gas pipeline she supported early in the role.
The state of Alaska received over 1,200 e-mails from msnbc reporter Bill Dedman in February 2010. Almost 250 more were withheld by the state under the allegation that executive power extends to Palin as an unpaid advisor to the government. Palin "obviously plays a crucial part," Anchorage Daily News columnist Gregg Erickson said in September 2008. I've seen him in the governor's office, and I know that she and the governor's office held interviews with him present." Palin's emails showed that he was discussing a variety of issues: potential board appointees, constituent lawsuits, oil and gas production, pipeline upgrades, and native Alaskan concerns, as well as eventual compensation for traveling, the governor's care of pregnancy, "confidentiality concerns," as part of the department of Land Management's land transfer and trespass issues.
Palin, a community volunteer, worked in youth sports, coaching hockey, and basketball as of late 2009. In the 2008 Miss Alaska pageant, he served as a judge.
Palin became a contestant on the NBC reality competition series Stars Earn Stripes in August 2012.
First Dude, a Thoroughbred racehorse, finished second at the 2010 Preakness Stakes and claimed the 2011 Hollywood Gold Cup.
Personal life
Palin eloped with his high-school friend Sarah Heath in August 1988. The Palins have five children: Track Charles James (b.) Bristol Sheeran Marie (b. 1998), a 1989 enlisted soldier in the US Army and deployed to Iraq on September 11, 2008. She has Down syndrome (2008), and seven grandchildren.
Palin fishes and holds a Private Pilot Certificate. He also owns a Piper PA-18 Super Cub, which also owns his own aircraft.
Faye Palin, Palin's stepmother, battled unsuccessfully in 2002 for the position of mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, to replace Palin's wife, who was term limited. Faye Palin, a registered Democrat and a voter, lost to Dianne M. Keller, a candidate supported by Sarah Palin.
Palin filed for divorce from Sarah on August 29, 2019, citing "incompatibility of temperament" as the reason for the change. On March 23, 2020, the divorce was finalized.
Career
Palin was a union activist and belonged to the United Steelworkers union.
He worked with BP in Alaska's North Slope oil fields for eighteen years. In 2007, when his employer became involved in natural gas pipeline talks with his wife's administration, he took a leave from his work as production manager in order to prevent a conflict of interest relating to his wife's position as governor. Todd returned to BP seven months later, because the family needed more money. This time, he accepted a non-management role as a production manager in order to prevent a potential conflict of interest. On September 18, 2009, he resigned from his job due to the desire to spend more time with his family.
On the Nushugak River, he is also a commercial salmon fisherman from Bristol Bay.
