Todd Haley Life

Todd Haley (born February 28, 1967) is an American football coach.

He appeared as the wide receivers coach of the New York Jets, Chicago Bears, and Dallas Cowboys from 1997 to 2006.

He served as the offensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2007 to 2011, as the Kansas City Chiefs' offensive coordinator from 2009 to 2011, and as the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator in 2018.

Early years

Haley was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 28, 1967. He is the son of Dick Haley, the Pittsburgh Steelers' and New York Jets' former Director of Player Personnel, as well as a former NFL cornerback.

Haley, adolescence, was a ball boy for the Steelers and spent summers with his dad in the Steelers' training camps. Haley and his dad will watch the Steelers' game and film together. Haley attended Upper St. Clair High School while his family was living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for his father's occupation. He went on to play for the University of Florida and University of Miami, competing on both clubs' respective golf squads. Haley earned a bachelor's degree in communication from the University of North Florida in 1991. Haley is one of the few players to have never played football beyond the youth level.

Personal life

Haley and his partner, Chrissy, have five children together.

After his wife discovered a dead rat in her salad in 2006, Haley filed a 1.5 million-dollar lawsuit against McDonald's. While Haley was a member of the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff, the salad was purchased at a Southlake, Texas McDonald's restaurant. The rat was first discovered by his wife and their live-in babysitter before they realized it. The case was settled out of court for a non-disclosured sum.

Following the Steelers' Week 17 game, Todd Haley was hospitalized in a fall on Sunday evening, according to a team spokesperson. Although Haley was wounded in an altercation at a bar outside Heinz Field, a Pittsburgh City Police spokesperson confirmed that it was Haley's wife, Christine, who was involved in a "minor scuffle" at the bar Tequila Cowboy that soon ended, who later reported it was Haley. Todd Haley was not involved nor injured in the shooting.

Todd Haley Career

Coaching career

Haley was hired by the New York Jets in 1995 and spent two seasons as an assistant in the scouting department. Dick Haley's father was working with the Jets as Director of Player Personnel at the time. He was promoted to offensive assistant/quality control coach in 1997 and spent a long time with then-offensive coordinator Charlie Weis. From 1999 to 2000, Haley was the Jets' wide receivers coach, helping Keyshawn Johnson make his second Pro Bowl appearance. Haley began his Jets career with Scott Pioli, who served as Director of Pro Personnel from 1997 to 1999. Pioli was the Kansas City Chiefs' general manager and recruited Haley as the team's head coach in 2009.

In 2001, Haley began coaching the Chicago Bears as a wide receivers coach and spent in the position until 2003.

Haley served as the Dallas Cowboys' wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator from 2004 to 2006. Terry Glenn and Terrell Owens were involved in the development of quarterback Tony Romo and the Cowboys' passing offense, which was centered around wide receiver Terry Glenn and Terrell Owens.

Haley was hired as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator by Ken Whisenhunt in 2007. Haley did not start calling plays for the Cardinals until late in the season. Multiple offensive categories ranked the Cardinals in the top half of the NFL.

The Cardinals offense in 2008, according to Haley's instruction, was one of the league's most innovative and explosive units. Arizona finished third in the league in scoring, winning a franchise-record 427 points (26.7 ppg). The Cardinals were fourth in total offense, with averaging of 365.8 yards per game. Arizona finished second in the league in passing offense (292.1 ypg) and ranked sixth in the NFL with 20.5 first downs per game. After winning the NFC West Division championship, the Cardinals finished the season with a 9-7 record and a playoff berth. After scoring more than 30 points in each of its three playoff games, the Cardinals advanced to play in their first Super Bowl in franchise history.

The Cardinals offense was featured in Super Bowl XLIII by the NFL's best-ranked Pittsburgh Steelers defense. The Cardinals offense fought back from a 13-point deficit and led the game 23-20 with just over two minutes remaining after trailing 17-7 at halftime. In the game's last seconds, the Cardinals defeated the Cardinals 27–23.

Carl Peterson, the long-serving Kansas City Chiefs GM, resigns on December 14, 2008. This opened the way for the recruitment of General Manager Scott Pioli on January 13, 2009. Herman Edwards, who had been serving as the Chiefs' head coach since 2006, was not expected to return for 2009 after being fired. Edwards was shot on January 23, just five days after the Arizona Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. Haley had been frequently asked about Kansas City and the possibility of collaborating his former colleague Pioli ahead of Super Bowl XLIII. He'd later say that it was the day after the Super Bowl, which the Cardinals lost, that he heard his name called for the Chiefs' coaching position.

Haley was given the Chiefs' head coaching job just days after the Cardinals' appearance in Super Bowl XLIII. Haley accepted the position on February 6, 2009, and has agreed to a four-year deal. Joel Collier, Gary Gibbs, Steve Hoffman, Bill Muir, Clancy Pendergast, Pat Perkins, and Dedric Ward were recruited by Haley to unspecified positions on the Chiefs' 2009 coaching staff, including Bob Bicknell, Joe D'Alessandris, Chan Gailey, Brent Salazar, and Cedric Smith from Herm Edwards' staff. Ward and Pendergast had previously worked with Haley in Haley.

Initially, there were concerns about whether Chan Gailey would be retained under Haley's coaching staff, because Haley had just completed a fruitful stint as Arizona's offensive coordinator. "The more I work with the guy, the more I love him," Haley said after losing their first three preseason games partially due to Gailey's offer to reinstate a spread offense similar to the one that was used midway through the 2008 season. Gailey was kicked out of service, and Haley assumed offensive play-calling duties for the remainder of the season.

In 2009, the Chiefs lost their first five games under Haley. Haley won his first game as the Chiefs' head coach on October 18, 2009, defeating the Washington Redskins 14–6.

Larry Johnson, the Chiefs' rookie quarterback, was suspended for one week after he received a letter on Twitter in which he questioned Haley's teaching abilities and used homophobic slurs when addressing the media. "My father has more creditworthiness than any of these pro coaches," Johnson said on Twitter. "My father worked for the coach from "Remember the Titans" was followed by "Most of the Titans." Our coach played golf. My father played for the Redskins for a brief period of time. Our coach. Nuthin is a female "nuthin." [Sic]: When Johnson recovered from his suspension, he was released.

With victories over the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers on November 15, Johnson led the Chiefs to their first two-game winning streak since the 2007 season. In overtime, the Steelers, the defending Super Bowl champions, won by 27-24. With a victory over the Denver Broncos, the Chiefs brought an end to their season and secured their Wild-Card playoff berth. This was the first Kansas City victory since 2000 and the first victory at Mile High in 2001. The Chiefs' season came to an end with a 4-12 record, marking a two-win improvement over 2008.

The Chiefs won their first three games, including the season opener against the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football, and the last undefeated team in the NFL before losing at Indianapolis in Week 5. Kansas City was able to win the AFC West for the first time since 2003.

The Chiefs faced the Baltimore Ravens at Arrowhead Stadium on January 9, 2011. Matt Cassel had a field day for 70 yards and three interceptions, but the Chiefs lost the game 30-7. Jamaal Charles' only touchdown was a 41-yard touchdown.

In the year's final preseason game, Haley selected his starters against the Green Bay Packers on September 2, 2011. Tony Moeaki, a key piece of the team's 2011 offensive plans, suffered his knee injury in the second quarter and was suspended for the remainder of the season. The Chiefs lost 20–19 in a game largely fought by the Chiefs and the Packers' backups, prompting many to question Haley's decision to use his best players late in the game.

Despite having missed several key players due to injuries, Haley led the Chiefs to a come-from-behind victory on Monday Night Football on October 31, 2011. The victory put KC's fourth in a row, vaulting them to first place in the AFC West. It was the first time in NFL history that a team that started 0–3 was leading its division by the halfway point of the season.

Matt Cassel, the Chiefs' starting quarterback, suffered a hand injury during a week 11 match against the Denver Broncos. Tyler Palko was recalled and underwent surgery on November 14 for the injured hand. Cassel was put on injured reserve on November 21, bringing an end to his season. Palko was unable as a back-up to a mere serviceable Cassel in 2011, prompting many to ask how a team with legitimate playoff hopes entering the 2011 season had been so thin at so many key positions, especially quarterback and safety, where the Chiefs' lack of depth was more woeful.

Haley was fired on December 12, 2011 after leading his team to a 5–8 record during the 2011 NFL season. The 2011 season began with three setbacks, including two blow-outs to Detroit and Buffalo. The team appeared to recover after winning four straight games before losing the next 5 of 6, which included a complete team breakdown in Haley's last game against the New York Jets. Haley was suspended for an unsportsmanlike conduct foul foul, causing the Jets to miss a touchdown drive that ultimately put the game out of reach. Romeo Crennel, the defensive coordinator, was named to replace Haley following the loss.

The Steelers announced on February 13, 2012, that Haley would be the team's next offensive coordinator. Haley grew up in the Pittsburgh suburb of Upper Saint Clair, Pennsylvania, and his father, the Steelers' former personnel director, was his father. He was the first offensive coordinator to be recruited from outside the company in 13 years. The Steelers revealed on January 17, 2018 that Haley's deal, which had come to an end during the 2017 season, would not be renewed.

The Cleveland Browns recruited Haley as their offensive coordinator on January 22, 2018. Haley and head coach Hue Jackson were fired on October 29, 2018.

Haley was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Riverview Rams in Sarasota, Florida, on February 14, 2020.

Haley was appointed head coach and general manager for the Tampa Bay Bandits of the United States Football League on January 6, 2022.

Haley has been described as a vivacious coach and can be adamant with players. He had a first-half altercation with quarterback Kurt Warner and then a brief standout in full view of television cameras with wide receiver Anquan Boldin later in the game. When he was the wide receivers coach in Dallas, he had a spat with Terrell Owens. Haley said, "It's part of how I coach..." It's part of how I motivate, and I like to believe I've had some success doing it."
