Toby Alderweireld Career

Club career

Born in Antwerp, Alderweireld, was admitted to Germinal Beerschot's youth academy in August 2004. He signed his first professional deal on February 22, 2007, tying him to the club until June 30, 2010. He was named in the 2008–09 season as the first team, but his first team debut came on January 18th. During a 1–1 draw against Fiorentina in the UEFA Cup on February 26, he made his European debut on February 26th. Despite the fact that he made several appearances for the remainder of the season, he was granted a new long-term contract extension until 2014.

Alderweireld was a member of the first team and starting XI during the 2009–10 season. Following the departure of former captain Thomas Vermaelen to Arsenal, he and fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen became the first-choice center back in the country's second class. After a string of good results, new Ajax coach Martin Jol praised the two defenders and kept faith in the pair. During the 3–0 victory over Heracles on September 4th, he scored his first league goal for the club when he opened scoring with a header from Luis Suárez's corner kick. Ajax beat NEC 3–2 on January 27th with a late equalizer in extra time during the KNVB Cup quarter-final against NEC; Siem de Jong scored five minutes before the final whistle, giving Ajax a 3–2 victory. Alderweireld was named Ajax Talent of the Year at the end of the 2009-2010 season. In Ajax's 2–1 Group G loss to Auxerre, he promised himself of a place in the Efe's history books on November 3rd. He scored a spectacular 25-yard strike at the San Siro against Champions League group rivals Milan in a 2–0 away victory in the 2010-11 season. In a 2–0 home win, he followed this spectacular goal with an even more impressive 32-yard victory over Feyenoord. Alderweireld made strides in his abilities as a footballer in the 2011–12 season, as well as establishing a strong alliance with captain and fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen. Alderweireld's offensive skills were also on display against Heerenveen, who scored a spectacular goal.

Alderweireld scored for Ajax in the 44th minute, bringing his team up to a goals difference going into halftime 2–1. It was a match that Ajax would lose 4–2, making it the third time a Johan Cruyff Shield was involved in and finished as runners-up. The 2012-2013 season will be a fruitful one, with Alderweireld's third year in a row, as well as his third straight Equestrian title for Ajax and 32nd overall. In the first leg of the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League, Alderweireld scored two goals during the regular season against PEC Zwolle and Twente, as well as scoring another goal against Steaua București in the first leg of the Round of 32. Ajax had been drawn into a group with Manchester City, Real Madrid, and eventual runners-up Borussia Dortmund for their Champions League campaign, but they were unable to progress in the second leg match in Romania, losing 4–2 on penalty kicks after extra time.

Alderweireld decided not to prolong his deal with Ajax, causing a lot of buzz in the off-season, with Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool, Napoli, and Norwich City among the few keen to sign the young defender.

Alderweireld joined Atlético Madrid on a four-year deal for an estimated €7 million (£6.16 million) transfer fee. He appeared in 12 games as the club won La Liga; on May 11th, he scored his first goal of the season, an equalizer in a 1–1 home draw with Málaga, ensuring that Atlético stayed in the title fight. In place of Filipe Lus, Alderweireld appeared in the final seven minutes and extra time of the 2014 Champions League final for Atlético; the team was beating city rival Real Madrid 1–0 when he began playing; but Atlético lost 1–4.

On September 1, 2014, Alderweireld was given a season-long loan to Southampton in England's Premier League, with the possibility for Southampton to buy him at the end of the season. In a 4–0 win over Newcastle United, he made his Southampton debut on September 13th, helping keep a clean sheet. In Southampton's 3–1 away win over Crystal Palace on December 26, he scored his first goal for the club, Southampton's third in a 3–1 away victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday by heading James Ward-Prowse's corner kick.

Southampton had a £6.8 million bid to buy Alderweireld but Atlético cancelled the agreement in July 2015 in order to sell to the highest bidder. According to subpoena reports, Atlético was unable to use their buy-out within time.

Despite Southampton's legal concerns regarding the transfer, Alderweireld joined Tottenham Hotspur on a five-year deal that lasted until the summer of 2020 at White Hart Lane, despite Southampton threatening legal action over the transfer. Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen, who previously worked for Ajax's north London team, were reunited at Spurs. Alderweireld made his club debut in the 2015 MLS All-Star Game in Denver, Colorado, on July 30.

In a 4–1 victory over Manchester City at White Hart Lane on September 26, Alderweireld's first goal for Tottenham occurred. In another 4–1 victory over London rivals West Ham United on November 22, the club's second goal was his second. Alderweireld scored for Tottenham in a 2–2 draw against Arsenal on Friday in the 183rd North London Derby. In a 3–0 victory over Manchester United, he was Spurs' second scorer a month later.

Alderweireld has been regarded by analysts as one of the top defenders in the Premier League during his first season with national team colleague Jan Vertonghen and later Austrian Kevin Wimmer. Tottenham has had the best defensive record in the Premier League, with only 25 goals conceded from 34 games. The club had the joint-lowest number of goals conceded (35) in the Premier League over the season. He was chosen as a center back for the PFA Team of the Year.

He was a regular in the Spurs starting lineup until suffering a fractured shoulder at West Bromwich Albion on October 15th. He was on the injured list for many weeks until he returned to the Champions League as a replacement against CSKA Moscow on December 7th. With a 7-1 victory over Hull City on May 21, Alderweireld defeated them for their last goal of the season. He was a member of Tottenham's outstanding defensive record this season, with just 26 goals conceded in the Premier League this season (only 9 of which were allowed in home league games), 6 better than the previous record of 32 conceded in the Second Division in 1908-09, which was lower than the previous record of 32 conceded.

Alderweireld played in all Premier League and Champions League games from the 2017–18 season, but in the home game against Real Madrid that resulted in a 3–1 victory, he sustained a hamstring injury on November 1, 2017. He will be out of the team for a few months because of the injury. He returned to the starting lineup in the FA Cup's fourth round replay against Newport County, which Tottenham defeated 2–0. However, he was forced to miss the team due to a hamstring strain while training two weeks later. In April, he returned to the squad toward the end of the season.

Alderweireld became a regular player for Tottenham in the 2018-19 season after a season marred by injuries and being out of favour. Spurs gave up the ability to extend his contract until 2020 in January 2019. In the last minute of a tightly fought match against Liverpool, he scored an own goal, losing 2–1.

Alderweireld signed a contract extension until 2023 on December 20, 2019. Alderweireld scored his first goal for the club since May 2017, making amends for a previous mistake and assisting Tottenham in defeating Aston Villa 32-0. He scored an 81st-minute winner over Arsenal in a North London derby on July 12, 2020, leading his team to a 2–1 victory.

Alderweireld scored his first goal of the 2020-21 season in a 3–0 home win over Leeds United on January 2nd.

Tottenham Hotspur revealed on July 20, 2021, that Alderweireld would join Qatar Stars League club Al-Duhail. He made 29 appearances for the team over the 2021-22 season, scoring once in the quarter-final match of their Emir of Qatar Cup-winning campaign, a 4–1 victory over Al-Sailiya on March 6, 2022.

Alderweireld joined Belgian First Division A club Royal Antwerp on a three-year contract on July 15, 2022.

International career

Alderweireld first represented Belgium under the age of 17 in October 2005 and competed in the 2006 UEFA U17 Championships. He made his senior debut for Belgium in a friendly tournament, the Kirin Cup, against Chile on May 29, 2009. However, his full senior debut came three months later in a match against the Czech Republic. He was selected in multiple 2010 World Cup qualifying squads, but most likely was a wasted replacement. In October 2009, he came on as a second-half substitute for Daniel Van Buyten in the 2–0 loss to Estonia.

On November 13, 2009, Alderweireld was called up to the Belgian U21 Championship qualifier against Ukraine, which finished 2–0 to Ukraine. During the 2012 UEFA Euro qualification match against Turkey on September 7, 2010, he came right back.

Alderweireld was named in the squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on May 13th. He appeared in all five games of Belgium's tournament play, including the 1–0 loss to Argentina in the quarterfinals. He received a bronze medal with Belgium after a 2–0 victory over England in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In a 5–1 victory over Iceland on September 8, Alderweireld played his 100th match for Belgium.

Vertonghen's initial play began following medical examinations, with Tottenham's club doctors being more alert in their treatment of the incident and following the right procedures.

The INEOS billionaire, who will pay £1.3 billion for a 5 percent interest in Old Trafford, wants to appoint a new sporting director to control the club's player recruitment process. Ratcliffe will seek the sage assistance of legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson in order to make the correct appointment, which was revealed on Thursday. A number of candidates have applied for the position, some of whom are now in play and others outside of work, with some of whom are still in school and some out of work, and others who are still working, and others who are unemployed, and some of whom are still in school. We run the decision over the mooted candidates for this vital role as Ratcliffe comes to an end.
