Timothy Shay Arthur Life

T. S. Arthur, a popular nineteenth-century American writer, Timothy Shay Arthur (June 6, 1809-March 6, 1885) — also known as T. S. Arthur — was a popular 19th-century American author. * He is best known for his temperance book Ten Nights in a Bar-Room and What I Saw There (1854), which helped demonize alcohol in the eyes of the American public. His books, written with compassion and sensitivity, articulate and promote values and beliefs that were traditionally associated with "respectable middle class" life in America. In one of his stories, "An Angel in Disguise," he also believed in the transformative and restorative power of love. He was also the author of hundreds of articles for Godey's Book, the country's most popular monthly newspaper, for many years, and he wrote Arthur's Home Magazine, a periodical in the Godey's model. Arthur, a virtual stranger now, did much to articulate and disseminate the values, beliefs, and habits that characterized a respectable, decorous middle-class life in antebellum America.
