Tim Robinson (born May 23, 1981) is an American actor, comedian, and writer best known for his appearances in Netflix's I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson and the Comedy Central series Detroiters.

He was known as a writer and cast member on Saturday Night Live before that.

Early life

Robinson was born in Detroit on May 23, 1981, the son of a mother who worked for Chrysler and a father who worked in construction. His parents divorced, and he grew up with two fathers, one of whom was Jewish and the other celebrating Hanukkah with Robinson. He grew up in Clarkston and Waterford, Texas, after graduating from Clarkston High School in 2000. He attended a live Second City comedy performance in Chicago, which later inspired him to attend weekend improv classes at Second City Detroit. After high school, he pursued a comedy career while still supporting himself with odd jobs such as working in a toy store and teaching improv classes.

Personal life

When the two teenagers were in high school, Robinson began dating Heather, who later became an electrical engineer for Chrysler. They married in September 2006 and now have a son and daughter together. They live in Los Angeles.

Robinson traveled with Second City Detroit's touring company before moving to Second City Chicago. He has appeared at the iO Theater and Just for Laughs. He made his debut on Saturday Night Live in September 2012. After being mainly a writer and the second SNL actor to move from performer to writer, he was revealed a year later. He, alongside fellow Detroit native and frequent collaborator Sam Richardson, is also the co-creator and co-star of Detroiters. In February 2017, Comedy Central premiered the program. Al Capone appeared on Fox's Making History in April 2017.

In 2018, Netflix green-lit I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, a sketch comedy film starring Robinson and produced by The Lonely Island's members. It premiered in April 2019 and received critical praise, as did its second season, which premiered in July 2021.

Robinson received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series in 2022 for his role on I Think You Should Leave.
