James Thorne Smith, Jr. (March 27, 1892- 1934) was an American writer of humorous supernatural fantasy books under the byline Thorne Smith.
He is best known today for his two Topper books, comic fantasy stories involving sex, heavy drinking, and ghosts.
These were sold millions of copies in the 1930s and 1950s paperbacks were also popular in racy illustrations. Smith drank as consistently as his characters; his appearance in James Thurber's The Years with Ross involved an unexplained week's absence.
When asked why he hadn't called in sick, he replied, "The telephone was in the hall and there was a draft." ..
Smith was born in Annapolis, Maryland, the son of a Navy commodore, and attended Dartmouth College.
Smith, who worked part-time as an advertising agent, had a meteoric success with the publication of Topper in 1926.
He was a founder of Free Acres, a social experimental neighborhood established by Bolton Hall in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, according to Henry George's economic principles.
He died of a heart attack in 1934 while holidaying in Florida.
