Thomas Rolland Norris (born January 14, 1944) is a retired United States Navy SEAL and Distinguished Eagle Scout who received the Medal of Honor for his ground rescue with the help of Petty Officer Third Class Nguyen Van Kiet of two downed pilots in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, between April 10-13, 1972.
Lieutenant Norris, a SEAL Advisor with the Strategic Technical Directorate Assistance (STDA) Team at the time of the incident, was a SEAL Advisor with the Strategic Technical Directorate Assistance (STDA) Team.
Prior to 1971, the STDA was known as the Survey and Observations Group. Norris was one of three SEALs to be honoured with the Medal of Honor for their service during the Vietnam War.
Early life
Thomas Norris was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on January 14, 1944. He grew up in Wisconsin and Washington, D.C., and was a member of the Boy Scouts of America as a youth and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Following high school, he enrolled at the University of Maryland in 1963 with the intention of pursuing a criminology career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In 1967, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in Criminology. He was a wrestling champion in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1965 and 1966 when he was a student at a university.
