Thomas Iain Abercrombie (born 5 July 1987) is a New Zealand professional basketball player for the New Zealand Breakers of the Australian National Basketball League (NBL).

A product of Westlake Boys High School in Auckland, Abercrombie had a short-lived college basketball stint with Washington State before debuting in the Australian NBL in 2008 with the Breakers.

In 2011, he won his first NBL championship and earned Grand Final MVP honours.

He went on to win three more championships in 2012, 2013 and 2015.

An 11-year, 303-game veteran with the Breakers, Abercrombie is the club's all-time leading scorer with 3,450 points. Abercrombie has also played four seasons in the New Zealand NBL and has had stints aboard in France, Spain and Turkey.

Early life and junior career

Abercrombie was born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, and played four years in rugby. He captained the basketball team to the NCAA Championships in 2005. He was also the school's deputy head boy and captain of the volleyball team that year.

Abercrombie, a junior, competed for the North Harbour Basketball Association and for New Zealand with the Junior Tall Blacks, representing New Zealand.

Abercrombie won a scholarship with Washington State University in November 2005. He spent two seasons with the Cougars, redshirting his freshman season in 2006-07 before seeing action in 12 games in 2007.

Professional career

Abercrombie joined the New Zealand Breakers in the Australian NBL as a development player in the 2008–09 season after returning home following his college stint. He appeared in 13 games with the Breakers in his first season as a member of the Full Squad for the 2009–10 season. Due to an ankle injury, he missed four games in the back half of the season.

Abercrombie was a player with the Breakers in the 2010-2011 season, where they defeated the Cairns Taipans 2–1 to win their first grand final series. He was later named Grand Final MVP. Abercrombie went on to win three other championships with the Breakers in 2012, 2013, and 2015.

Abercrombie's all-time leading scorer was named Kirk Penney in January 2016. Abercrombie had to pass Penney twice in 276 games in October 2018 to reach 3227 points. He played his 300th NBL game in February 2019.

Abercrombie committed to the Breakers until the 2021–22 season.

Abercrombie made history by becoming the second player in the NBL (after Daniel Kickert in 2016–17 and 2017-18) to join the exclusive 50–40–90 club in 2019-20. Abercrombie averaged 12.1 points per game on the season, shooting 50.0 percent from the field, 46.5 percent from three-point range, and 90.5 percent from the free throw line.

Abercrombie played his 355th game for the Breakers in April 2021, defeating Mika Vukona (354) to become the franchise's all-time games played leader. In 3-pointers made, he also defeated Kirk Penney (489) as the team's all-time leader.

Abercrombie suffered with a side strain for the majority of the 2021–22 NBL season. He had a torn retina and needed emergency surgery during the 2022 pre-season.

Abercrombie made his debut in the New Zealand NBL in 2009 with the Waikato Pistons. While winning Rookie of the Year and All-Star Five awards, he helped the Pistons win the championship. He stayed with the Pistons in 2010 and gained All-Star Five accolades for the second time in a row while helping the Pistons make their second straight grand final appearance. In 2011, he returned to the Pistons for his third season as a All-Star Five honors winner once more.

Abercrombie played half of a season with the Wellington Saints in 2019, assisting them in winning a championship while also receiving Grand Final MVP awards.

Abercrombie was involved in mini-camps with NBA teams like the San Antonio Spurs, Milwaukee Bucks, Houston Rockets, and Dallas Mavericks during the 2013 NBL off-season. He then joined the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Summer League.

Abercrombie spent time in France with ASVEL Basket in 2013-14. He went on to have similar post-NBL seasons in the following three years, including with Gipuzkoa Basket in Spain in 2015 and then two seasons in Turkey with Pnar Karşya (2016) and Büyükçe Basketbol (2017).

National team career

In 2006, Abercrombie made his Tall Black debut. He represented New Zealand at the World University Games in 2007. Since 2009, he has been a regular with the Tall Blacks. He received a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2018. He appeared at the FIBA World Cup in 2019.
