Wilson Chandler Career

Early life and high school career

Chandler was raised by his grandparents in Benton Harbor, Michigan, a three-hour drive from Detroit and two hours from Chicago. When he was in fifth grade, he began playing basketball at Fairplain East Elementary School in the Benton Harbor Area Schools; later, he attended Benton Harbor High School. As a sophomore and junior, he earned Michigan All-State honors; as a freshman, he led the BHHS Tigers to a 19–4 record. The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan also named him to the first team All-State. He had 24 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks per game as a senior. During the regular season, Chandler and the Tigers went undefeated, earning them their first-place finish and were ranked #1 in the state. In the regional final, they were defeated by eventual state champion Holt High School. Chandler was named Mr. Basketball of Michigan in 2005.

College career

Chandler was recruited by and deemed "Mexico State University, Indiana University, Purdue University, and the University of Dayton; however, he later transferred to DePaul University late in 2004. He averaged 10.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game during his freshman year at DePaul, ranked 10th in the Big East) per game. Chandler played in his first breakout game on November 30, 2005, putting up 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks in a Blue Demons win over Creighton University. He posted 16 rebounds against Dayton on December 10, 2005, the most by a freshman since Quentin Richardson grabbed 16 in 1999. Twice this season, he was named Rookie of the Week twice. He was also named to the Big East freshman team. Chandler had scored 20 or more points four times in his career, with a career-high of 26. During his sophomore season, he averaged 14.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. Chandler was named to the Big East all-second squad as a freshman and had eight double-doubles as a senior while leading the team to a 20-win season. They made it to the NIT quarterfinals. With 86, he ranked tenth on DePaul's all-time list for blocked shots.

Professional career

After careful consideration, Chandler decided to enter his name in the 2007 NBA draft in April 2007. Chris Grier was his agent before starting the draft. Prior to the draft, he had not worked out for several clubs. Before being unable to work with any other teams, he was injured in Atlanta. The Knicks talked to his agent and told him they were interested in him. Isiah Thomas, the team's general manager, had a lot of contacts at DePaul University and knew him from watching him play in college.

Chandler was drafted 23rd overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Knicks on June 28, 2007. He had 8 points, 2 rebounds, and a steal in his first game on November 13, 2007. He had his best game on April 6, 2008, scoring 23 points against the Orlando Magicians. He averaged 7.3 points per game throughout the season.

Chandler's role with the Knicks expanded during the 2008–09 season under head coach Mike D'Antoni. While playing in all 82 games, he finished the season with 14.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Chandler had a pivotal game against the Toronto Raptors, scoring 32 points on 12–23 shootings, including 6–10 from beyond the arc. Chandler was ranked second on the sophomore squad in the 2009 Rookie Challenge, where he was tied for most rebounds.

Chandler averaged 15.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 65 games from 2009-2010.

Chandler was bitten in the front by former teammate David Lee on November 11, 2010 during a loss to the Golden State Warriors. Chandler sat out for a few minutes before returning to the game to finish with 27 points and 3 blocks. Chandler posted a new career high against the Sacramento Kings on February 9, 2010 but the Knicks lost 118-114. During the All-Star Weekend, Chandler assisted teammate Nate Robinson in the dunk contest. Nate Robinson used Chandler's back as a trampoline to dunk the basketball in the dunk. In a game against the Atlanta Hawks, Chandler made a crucial play down the stretch earlier this season. Chandler had struggled all game but eventually put up a big block on a Josh Smith dunk attempt. According to the referees, Al Horford, who attempted a put-back, was recalled the blocked shot but released the gun too late. The Knicks finished the season with a poor record of 29-53, which was also out of the playoffs. The Knicks made moves such as transferring Tracy McGrady in order to have cap space to make a big signing during the offseason and bring talent around Chandler. Amar'e Stoudemire was the big signing. Chandler scored 22 points in a season-opening win for the new-look Knicks on October 27, 2010.

Donnie Walsh, the 2011 Knicks' general manager, announced his intention to sign Chandler to a long-term contract on January 6, 2011. Chandler was enjoying his best season as a Knicks coach and excited to be named in Mike D'Antoni's role. Chandler will be able to play positions 2 to 4 on the floor, moving from bench to bench. Chandler was also one of the top shot-blocking wing players during the season. Chandler's best game of the season came against the San Antonio Spurs on January 4, 2011. At the time, the Spurs were the NBA's best team, and they were easily defeated under Chandler's big game.

Chandler was traded to the Nuggets in a three-way blockbuster contract that also included the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Carmelo Anthony was shipped to New York on February 22, 2011. Chandler made an immediate impact in his Nuggets debut, scoring 16 points, eight of which were key fourth quarter points, in a victory over the Boston Celtics. Chandler had to adjust to a more open offense in Denver. The Nuggets and his colleagues Danilo Gallinari and Raymond Felton, along with their manager Danilo Gallinari, were one of the NBA's most cohesive teams. Without superstar Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets continued to play better, clinching the fifth seed in the playoffs with a 50-32 record. He beat the San Antonio Spurs 115–112 on March 23, 2011 and finished the game with 6 blocks, despite a strained ankle. Despite finishing with 8 points, the Nuggets led with a clutch jumper 29.3 seconds left to put the Nuggets up for good, 114–112. Chandler was on his first ride to the playoffs, where the Nuggets will meet the Oklahoma City Thunder led by Kevin Durant. Chandler scored 9 points in his first playoff game, as well as 8 rebounds. Chandler had a rough night in the playoffs, with only 4.8 points and 5.0 rebounds in only 23 minutes per game. In five games, the Nuggets were defeated.

Chandler signed with the Chinese Basketball Association's Zhejiang Guangsha Lions in August 2011, midst of an NBA lockout. He played with Zhejiang Guangsha under former Dallas Mavericks head coach Jim Cleamons. Chandler predicted that "Maybe I'll miss out," Chandler said, "but I think it will be a great learning experience." I haven't been to any [labor talks] meetings. I can't recall it. At the end of the day, I'm just taking a risk." Chandler didn't have an out-clause, so he didn't return until the All-Star break. If Chandler had not signed with a Chinese team, he would have been a restricted free agent. By acquiring Earl Clark, who left the team due to family reasons, Zhejiang Guangsha was attempting to bring more NBA players to Chandler. Tyson Chandler was later tempted to sign but the team turned down his bid. Chandler's debut in 50 minutes, with 23 points, 22 rebounds, and 4 assists, he scored in a 118-115 double overtime victory over Tianjin Ronggang. In a 111–94 victory, he followed his debut by scoring 28 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 assists against Qingdao DoubleStar. In Zhejiang Guangsha's first loss against the Shandong Lions, Chandler scored 42 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals. With the help of Chandler, the Lions made it to the playoffs to face the Beijing Ducks in the first round. Unfortunately, he did not participate in the playoffs, and as a result, Zhejiang was swept by Beijing.

Chandler was able to return to the NBA after Zhejiang was swept in the playoffs, bringing him right back to the Nuggets. Chandler signed a five-year deal with the Denver Nuggets on March 18, 2012. However, his season would come to an end after playing just 8 games for the Nuggets, as he suffered a labral tear in his left hip and was unable to participate in the playoffs.

Chandler agreed to a multi-year deal with the Nuggets on July 11, 2015. He was suspended for the entire 2015–16 season after suffering from surgery to repair a labral tear in his right hip on November 11, 2015.

In a 108-96 victory over the Sacramento Kings on March 7, 2017, Chandler scored his career-best 36 points.

Chandler and a potential second-round draft pick were traded to the Philadelphia 76ers on July 6, 2018 in exchange for cash considerations. He missed the first nine games of the 2018-19 season due to a hamstring strain, making his earliest appearance against the Detroit Pistons on November 3. He had four rebounds in ten minutes.

Chandler, Mike Muscala, Landry Shamet, and a number of future draft picks were traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovi and Mike Scott on February 6, 2019.

Chandler signed with the Brooklyn Nets on a one-year, veteran minimum deal on July 8, 2019. Chandler was suspended by the NBA for 25 games on August 29 for the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PED). He was flagged for Ipamorelin, a growth hormone that has appeared on the NBA's list of banned substances since 2016. Chandler was given small doses of the drug by his personal physician during his recovery from a quadriceps injury suffered during the 2018-19 season. Chandler came back from his suspension and made his Nets debut on December 15 in a 109-89 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Chandler had returned to Zhejiang Guangsha Lions on September 8, 2020.
