Miles joined Port Vale in June 1955 and went on to make five Second Division appearances in the 1956-57 relegation season. In the 1957–58 season, he appeared in six games in the Third Division South. He was a regular on the team until 1958-1959 Fourth Division title winning season, but he missed just one match of the 1958–59 Fourth Division championship season. In the 1959–60 season, he appeared in 41 games as the "Valiants" posted a mid-table finish in the Third Division under Norman Low's stewardship. In a 2–1 victory over Norwich City at Vale Park on January 23, he scored his first goal in the Football League. However, he and colleague Peter Ford were diagnosed with Tuberculosis, and he spent 12 weeks in hospital recuperation after the disease was found in the early stages. He was an ever-present in the 55 game 1960-61 season, scoring three goals against Chesterfield and three against Notts County in both games. In the 1961–62 campaign, he appeared in 52 games. He played 41 games and scored three goals against Reading, Bradford Park Avenue, and Bristol Rovers in the 1962–63 season. In the 1963–64 season, he played just 27 times, including the net against Southend United and Colchester United. He made 35 appearances in the 1964–65 season, as well as goals against Peterborough United (2), Brentford, and Southend United; Vale were relegated at the end of the season; new boss Jackie Mudie came from fifth. In a 2–0 home victory over Stockport County on September 4, miles became the club's first ever playing substitute in the Football League. Vale struggled at the bottom of the Fourth Division table, and he went on to play 30 games in the 1965–66 season. He appeared in 45 games in the 1966–67 campaign, including the net against Exeter City, Newport County, and Stockport County. In August 1967, he was given a testimonial that was shared with Harry Poole. He was given a free transfer in May 1968 and spent with the Sandbach Ramblers, a former classmate and Vale teammate Harry Poole. Miles later appeared on Eastwood and Michelin.

Coaching career

Miles, who resigned as a footballer, joined Wolstanton Park Rangers as the coach and assistant manager, then Port Vale's schoolboy coach. Despite being a devoted Vale fan, he left the club after they turned down his offer to sign a teenage Adrian Heath.
