Terry Jacks Life

Terrence Ross Jacks (born March 29, 1944) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, record producer, and activist best known for his 1974 hit song "Seasons in the Sun."

Early life

Terry Jacks was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In the early 1960s, his family immigrated to Vancouver. Jacks began playing guitar in his youth and formed The Chessmen with guitarist Guy Sobell at 18 — a boy band with guitar player Jack Sobell. From 1964 to 1966, the group had four top-ten hits in Vancouver.

On a Friday night in September 1965 for a "Back To School" fundraiser at the now-defunct T. Eaton Co. (Eaton's) department store in North Burnaby, a municipality next to Vancouver. Jacks and the Chessmen appeared live on a Friday night.

Parents from Burnaby South High School who loved music listened in to CFUN 1410 AM, which featured its "Request Line." Because they were skeptical about whether CFUN really responded to calls, they started calling the Request Line and requesting that the B side of the current Chessmen attack. CFUN started playing it and turned it into a two-sided smash, to their delight.

The Chessmen, Terry and Susan Pesklevits (Susan Jacks), who later married, formed The Poppy Family, alongside Craig McCaw and Satwant Singh. They had several hits in Canada and abroad, the most popular being "Which Way You Goin' Billy." "The company, which went to #1 in Canada and #2 on the Billboard charts in the United States, has risen to the top of the charts." Terry Jacks wrote and produced the album, earning him a Gold Leaf (Juno) award in 1970 for his work. In the summer of 1971, the Poppy Family appeared at the Lethbridge, Alberta, Stampede.

Personal life

Jacks faded from the music scene in the late 1970s. In 1973, He and Susan were divorced. In 1985, he became the father of a daughter. He became involved in the 1980s, focusing on pulp mill pollution in Canada. His environmental work has earned him several accolades, including one from the United Nations Association in Canada and the Western Canada Wilderness Committee. In 1997, he was given a lifetime achievement award for his efforts, as well as the Eugene Rogers Environmental Award.
