Early years
Higgins attended Oak Ridge High School in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. As a senior, he had 68 receptions for 1,044 yards and 18 touchdowns. A five star recruit, Higgins originally committed to the University of Tennessee to play college football before changing to Clemson University.
Higgins also played basketball in high school and was offered scholarships to play college basketball by numerous schools.
College career
Higgins, a freshman at Clemson, played in 13 games and had 17 receptions for 345 yards and two touchdowns.
Higgins, a rookie, started his second season in 2018. In the 44–16 victory over Alabama, he had three receptions for 81 yards in the College Football Playoff National Championship. He had 59 receptions for 936 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
Higgins led his team to a 14-1 record in junior season, beating LSU by a score of 42–25. In the game, the Higgins had a 36-yard rushing touchdown. Higgins decided to postpone his last year of eligibility and apply for the 2020 NFL Draft.
Professional career
Higgins was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft with the 33rd overall pick. Higgins agreed to his rookie deal, which will earn him eight years, on July 28, 2020.
Higgins made his NFL debut against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 of the 2020 season. On Thursday Night Football, he made his first three professional receptions for 35 yards against the Cleveland Browns. In Week 3, Higgins had five receptions for 40 yards and his first two professional receiving touchdowns against the Philadelphia Eagles. In Week 6 against the Indianapolis Colts, he had six receptions for 125 receiving yards. During the 36–10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 10, he had seven receptions for 115 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.
Higgins' rookie season featured 67 receptions for 908 yards and six receiving touchdowns. Cris Collinsworth's rookie record of 67 catches tied for the Bengals' rookie record set in 1981. With 81 receptions, rookie wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase will break the record the following year. In 2020, his 908 receiving yards ranked him third among all rookie receivers, behind Justin Jefferson and CeeDee Lamb.
