Early years

Swift attended St. Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a senior, he played high school football and rushed for 1,564 yards on 149 carries with 25 touchdowns. He committed to the University of Georgia to play college football.

College career

Swift was the third running back for Georgia as a freshman, behind Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. He rushed for 597 yards with three touchdowns on 73 attempts.

Swift split splits with junior Elijah Holyfield in his sophomore year, although he was more effective as a receiver. In games against Florida, Kentucky, and Auburn, he had three games with over 100 yards in a row. In the 35–28 loss, he had 16 rushing yards and a running touchdown, as well as six receptions for 63 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Swift played five games with over 100 passing yards and had a streak of four straight games without a rushing touchdown as a junior. He had 196 attempts for 1,218 passing yards and seven touchdowns to go along with 24 receptions for 216 receiving yards and one touchdown in 14 games.

Professional career

Swift was drafted by the Detroit Lions with the 35th overall pick in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The Lions agreed Swift to a four-year deal on July 13, 2020, worth $8.5 million.

Swift shared the backfield with Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson in his rookie season. In Swift's rookie debut on September 13, 2020, he scored his first career rushing touchdown, but he later missed what would have been a game-winning touchdown against the Chicago Bears. Swift rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, becoming the first Lions rookie to rush for 100 yards and two touchdowns in a game since Barry Sanders in 1989. In Week 10, against the Washington Football Team, he had 149 scrimmage yards and a receiving touchdown. The Tennessee Titans were thrown out of Week 15 by Vince Custer in Week 15. Swift finished the 2020 season with 114 passes for 521 yards and eight rushing touchdowns to go along with 46 receivers for 357 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 13 games.

Jamaal Williams was introduced to Swift in the Lions' backfield for the 2021 season. Swift totaled over 100 yards from scrimmage in four of the season's first eight games. Swift's victories against the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns were recorded in Weeks 10 and 11.
