Taylor Pyatt Career

Playing career

Pyatt spent three seasons with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Pyatt was selected eighth overall in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders after scoring 75 points in 68 games in his second OHL season. Pyatt scored 89 points in 68 games, his third and final with Sudbury, earning OHL First All-Star Team distinctions.

Pyatt made the final cut out of the Islanders' training camp in 2000–01 as the only player with no prior NHL experience. He scored his first NHL goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning on November 27, 2000. The Islanders traded Pyatt's rookie season, where he scored 18 points in 78 games, to the Buffalo Sabres (along with Tim Connolly) in exchange for Frank J. Selke Trophy winner Michael Peca in a draft-day trade.

Pyatt played for Hammarby IF of the Swedish HockeyAllsvenskan during the 2005-05 lockout.

Pyatt was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, after four seasons with Buffalo (later traded by Buffalo to the Calgary Flames). Pyatt enjoyed playing on the Canucks' top line with twins Henrik and Daniel Sedin, resulting in career-bests and points in 23 and 37 respectively.

Pyatt took a stick to the face during the 2007-08 season. To hold his teeth, he needed 25 stitches in his upper lip and a splint in his mouth. On his return to the lineup, he wore a full face shield and decided to wear a visor for the remainder of his Vancouver tenure. Despite being dropped off the Canucks' top line with the Sedins during the season, Pyatt finished his career with 37 points, as well as setting a new career record for assists with 21. Pyatt was suspended for eight games in 2008-09 due to a foot injury sustained on December 17, 2008. Pyatt made his return to the lineup against the Chicago Blackhawks on May 5 after suffering an injury to Pavol Demitra during the 2009 playoffs. Pyatt required off-season surgery to his knee following the Canucks' second round elimination.

Pyatt became an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2009, after not being re-signed by the Canucks. He signed a one-year, $600,000 deal with the Phoenix Coyotes two months later. Pyatt suffered a lower body injury while training camp and missed the team's first five regular season games. For the first time in their careers, one month after returning to the Coyotes' lineup, he and younger brother Tom Pyatt of the Montreal Canadiens played against each other. Pyatt scored his second goal of the game against the Anaheim Ducks on December 23, 2009, his 200th appearance in the NHL. After scoring a goal, receiving an assist, and participating in a fight, Pyatt scored a Gordie Howe hat trick against the Colorado Avalanche near the end of the regular season. The Coyotes won their first playoff appearance in seven seasons by beating the Avalanche 6–2 for their first playoff appearance in seven seasons. Pyatt finished the regular season with 12 goals and 23 points in 74 games played. As the Coyotes were eliminated in the Western Conference Quarterfinals by the Detroit Red Wings in seven games, he scored one goal and one assist.

Pyatt's two-year, $2 million contract extension with Phoenix was signed on June 21, 2010 thereby avoiding an unsupervised free agency. Pyatt's second season with the Coyotes began scoring more often than he had in his previous season. Pyatt sustained an upper body injury during a match with Penguins enforcer Deryk Engelland on December 20, 2010, but was then placed on the Coyotes' injured reserve list. He returned to the lineup for the Coyotes' New Year's Eve game against the St. Louis Blues after missing four games.

Pyatt signed with the New York Rangers on a two-year, $3.1 million deal on July 3, 2012. Pyatt's contract with the Rangers was canceled off waivers by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the last year of his employment. On January 15, 2014, he scored his first goal with the Penguins against the Washington Capitals. During the remainder of the season, he'll get three more goals. He did not participate in the 2014 playoffs.

Pyatt decided to a one-year free agent deal with Swiss company Genève-Servette HC of the National League A on July 24, 2014. Pyatt appeared alongside Genève-Servette for the first time in his career.

Pyatt retired from professional hockey after one season in Switzerland, his 15th professional season.
