Sydney McLaughlin (born August 7, 1999) is an American hurdler and sprinter who competed for the University of Kentucky before deciding to compete as a professional.

She took the silver medal at the 2019 World Championships in the 400 m hurdles, a new personal record of 52.23 seconds.

McLaughlin has set a number of age-group world records and has won the Gatorade National Girls Athlete of the Year award for both 2015–16 and 2016–17.

At the 2016 United States Olympic Trials, she came in third in the 400 meters hurdles, qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

In the 400m, McLaughlin sets a personal record of 50.07.

Early life

On August 7, 1999, Sydney McLaughlin was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Willie McLaughlin, her father, is a member of the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame as a three-time All-American. At the 1984 Olympic Trials, he was a semi-finalist in the 400 meters. Mary Neumeister McLaughlin, a 220 half-miler at Cardinal O'Hara High School in Tonawanda, New York, where she competed for the boys' team, was a member of the Athletic Union. Her parents were students at Manhattan College, but there was no women's track team when she arrived in 1979, so she became the head of the men's track team.

In Dunellen, New Jersey, Sydney grew up. McLaughlin began running at an early age, following brother Taylor and his older sister Morgan. She is a member of Union Catholic Regional High School in Scotch Plains, where she was the first two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in Track & Field.

Morgan, her older sister, enrolled in St. Peter's University. Taylor, her older brother, competed for the University of Michigan and gained silver in the 400 meter hurdles at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships. Both He and Sydney have registered for the 2016 US Olympic Team.

Ryan, her younger brother, was a track standout at Union Catholic. He was the fifth member of the family to win a New Jersey county track title.

Personal life

McLaughlin is married to Andre Levrone Jr., who graduated from the University of Virginia in 2017 and spent three seasons as a wide receiver in the NFL before leaving the program. Levrone and McLaughlin confirmed their engagement on August 25, 2021, at the Four Seasons Resort, Scottsdale. On May 5, 2022, the two married at Early Mountain Vineyards in Madison, Virginia.

McLaughlin is a Christian.

On August 28, 2021, Dunellen, New Jersey, a woman from Dunellen, New Jersey, was spotted on the track at the town's Columbia Park for McLaughlin.

Sydney McLaughlin Career

Early career

At the national junior (under-20) championships in 2014, McLaughlin came in second, behind Shamier Little in the 400 meters hurdles; her time of 55.63 was a national high school freshman record and a world age-14 record. She would have qualified to represent the United States in the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships, but she was too young to be eligible. McLaughlin also set a new world record (13.34) in the 100-meter hurdles over 76.2 cm (2 ft 6 in) hurdles this summer.

McLaughlin set a new personal record in a record setting in 1984, raising her 400-meter hurdles record to 55.28 at the 2015 national youth trials; the age 15 world record was lowered, and the country youth list ranked second, behind Leslie Maxie's world youth record (and national high school record) of 55.20 set in 1984. She qualified for the 2015 IAAF World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia, where she won gold in 55.94; she ended the year as the world youth and junior champion in the event.

At the 2016 New Balance national outdoor high school championships in 54.46, McLaughlin took the 400-meter hurdles in 54.46 seconds; Maxie's prep record and world youth record were broken, as well as Lashinda Demus' American junior record of 54.70. In addition, she spent time with Union Catholic's team in the Swedish medley relay, running a blistering 50.93 split for 400 meters as the team set a new high school record of 2:07.99. McLaughlin won the USATF junior championship in 54.54 the week after; in honor of her efforts, she was named Gatorade National Girls Athlete of the Year.

In the 400-meter hurdles at the 2016 United States Olympic Trials, McLaughlin defeated her heat (55.66) and semi-final (55.23). She came third in the final in 54.15, a new world youth record and world junior record, and qualifying for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro before her senior year in high school. McLaughlin is the youngest person to have served on the American Olympic track and field team since Carol Lewis and Denean Howard qualified for the boycotted Moscow Olympics in 1980. She came in 5th in her semi-final heat at the Olympics, losing to advance to the finals.

She was a member of a world record quartet that set the indoor distance medley relay world record of 102.41.31, which was set at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on January 28, 2017. The four legs were splits: Emma Coburn, 50.32 (400 meters) by McLaughlin, Olympic champion and former world 1500m champion Jenny Simpson, 4:28.66 (1600 m) by Brenda Martinez, 13.40 (1200 m) by Brenda Martinez, 52.43 (800 m) by Brenda Martinez, 138.12 (800 m) by Brenda Martinez, and British Olympic medalist and former world 1500m champion Jenny Simpson were among the four legs' splits. McLaughlin set a new balance national 400-meter record at the New Balance Nationals in New York City on March 12, 2017, just after the indoor season.

McLaughlin opened her outdoor season in April 2017 by breaking the 300 m national high school record at the Arcadia Invitational, running 38.90. Lashinda Demus, who ran 39.98 in 2001, previously held the record. McLaughlin's first attempt over 300 meters was set in the high school track meet in New Jersey, but not in the 300m hurdles. Her time of 38.90 is considered a North American record and the number two all-time best behind Zuzana Hejnová who ran 38.16 in 2013. McLaughlin claimed the fastest high school girls (400 m) relay split at the Championship of America high school girls 4 x 400 at the 123rd Penn Relays later this month. McLaughlin dominated her Union Catholic relay team to a third-place finish in 3:38.92 after being hammered at the back of an eight-team field. At the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Meet on June 18, she tied this record. She fought five runners to lead Union Catholic to victory in a time of 49.85 seconds, taking the baton in sixth place on the final handoff.

In 2015–16 and 2016–17, McLaughlin was named the Gatorade National Female Athlete of the Year. She was the first female to repeat in the award's then-15-year history. "She was on the front page of Sports Illustrated" when she received the award for the second time in July 2017, a coveted high school athlete ever," the publication said.

Professional career

After one year in Kentucky, she forfeited her ability to play in college to become a coach and signed a sponsorship with New Balance in October of the same year.

She received an estimated $1.5 million in annual base pay from New Balance after a bidding war. McLaughlin hired William Morris Endeavor, a company that typically represents Hollywood actors, rather than recruiting an athlete.

She is being trained by controversial track coach Bob Kersee, whose most success has been with female athletes.
