Sydney Carter Life

Sydney Bertram Carter (6 May 1915 – 13 March 2004) was an English poet, songwriter, folk musician, born in Camden Town, London.

He is best known for the song "Lord of the Dance" (1967), set to the tune of the American Shaker song "Simple Gifts", and the song "The Crow on the Cradle".

Other notable songs include "Julian of Norwich" (sometimes called "The Bells of Norwich"), based on words of Julian of Norwich, "One More Step Along the World I Go", "When I Needed a Neighbour", "Friday Morning", "Every Star Shall Sing a Carol", "The Youth of the Heart", "Down Below" and "Sing John Ball".

Career

Carter appeared on televisions and musicals in the 1950s and 1960s, and Sheila Hancock produced Putting out the Dustbin. A song about struggling to quit smoking, "Last Cigarette," became a minor hit on the album. Reflection, a rock band from 1968, released The Present Tense (Songs of Sydney Carter), incorporating his poetry and songs.

In a review by Michael Grosvenor Myer of England Dance and Song in 1972, Love More or Less was described as "an outstanding spokesman for the believer in an age of general ignorance."

He continued to work with Donald Swann, writing six songs for the 1964 Donald Swann EP, Songs of Faith and Doubt. He also served as a critic for Gramophone magazine in the 1960s. Carter produced Lord of the Dance, a six-song EP album containing Martin Carthy on guitar, the Johnny Scott Trio, and Mike Sammes singers. He has worked with Nadia Cattouse and Jeremy Taylor.

Carter appeared in Australia in 1972 and 1973. In 2005, Franciscus Henri, who was accompanying him, released an anthology of Carter's songs and poems (Nothing Fixed or Final). Bob and Carole Pegg recorded a collection of their songs with him in 1972, and Now It's So Early.

A collection of his songs appeared in 1981, the Lovely in the Dances, an all-star collection of English folk musicians. Shusha, Maddy Priority, and John Kirkpatrick were among the performers on the stage.
