With longing, Westerman, a Bold Artist Abroad, creates Folk-Pop Tinged

www.mtv.com, May 5, 2023
Robert Lax, a minimalist poet who followed in the footsteps of St. John the Revelator and relocated to Patmos, a small Greek island. In his 1996 book Love Had a Compass, he said, "I had hoped only to find a quiet place to live for a while and write some poems." He stayed there for the remainder of his life, learning that “you are never alone in Greece.” Love Had a Compass by Will Westerman, a London-born musician who scouted out Athens a few years ago, has read Love Had a Compass. Lax's short vertical lines on the page that resemble scrolling celluloid film (Lax had previously worked as both a writer and a screenwriter). In comparison, Westerman produces sophisticated folk-pop songs based on fictional characters in pivotal situations. Looking at Westerman's lyrics out brings a similar desire: to make a film from those scenes.
