Life
Fehn was born in Buskerud, Norway, at Kongsberg. He was the son of John Tryggve Fehn (1894-1991) and Sigrid Johnsen (1895–1985). He received his architectural training at Oslo's Oslo School of Architecture and Design. In 1946, he began studying and graduated in 1949. He worked with Arne Korsmo (1900-1968), according to other instructors.
Fehn and architect Geir Grung (1926-1989) were among the 49 winners of the Sandvig Collections in Lillehammer in 1949. Fehn joined PAGON (Professional Architects Group Oslo, Norway), in 1950. Arne Korsmo's group had the mission of implementing and promoting modern architecture.
He discovered vernacular architecture in Morocco from 1952 to 1953, which would greatly influence his later work. Later, he moved to Paris, where he spent two years in Jean Prouvé's studio, where he encountered Le Corbusier. On his return to Norway in 1954, he opened a studio of his own in Oslo.
Fehn received international recognition for his work on the Norwegian Pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World Exhibition, at the age of 34. He created two works in the 1960s that have remained highlights in his career: the Nordic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (1962), and the Hedmark Museum in Hamar (1967–79). The Norwegian Glacier Museum in Fjrland (1991-2002) and Oslo's National Museum of Art, Architecture, and Design (2003-08) are two other notable works.
He served as a professor at Oslo's School of Architecture from 1971 to 1995 and as the principal from 1986 to 1989. He has also lectured around Europe, including at Paris, Stuttgart, and Barcelona. He has taught at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Cooper Union in New York City, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.
