Early life
In Biratnagar, Nepal's second-largest city, Koirala was born to Bodh Prasad and Kumudini Koirala on August 12, 1939. He was a cousin of former Prime Minister Matrika Prasad Koirala, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, and Girija Prasad Koirala, a member of the politically influential Koirala family.
Personal life
Koirala remained unmarried throughout his life and was known to live a simple life. He was affectionately referred to as'sushil daa' by his coworkers and supporters. Political career
In 1954, Koirala was influenced by Nepali Congress' social-democratic ideals. He enthusiastically participated in Bhadra Abadalon (Civil Disobedience Movement) initiated by the Nepali Congress in 1958. In 1959, he was actively participating in the party's goal of obtaining the democratic elections. Bishweshwar Koirala became the country's first elected prime minister after the election. However, King Mahendra ordered and carried out a coup attempt in December 1960 and sacked the deposed government led by B.P. Koirala is located in Koirala. Under Koirala's leadership, Nepali Congress emerged as the country's largest party in the 2013 Constituent Assembly elections. He was elected leader of the congress' parliamentary party winning 105 out of 194 votes against former Prime Minister Deuba's 89 seats, and by the constituent assembly on February 10, 2014. During his time as prime minister, his government was chastised for the slow response to the Nepal earthquake in April 2015. That year, the country's four major political parties reached a historic deal that opened the way for the deafamation of a new constitution. Due to his position as Prime Minister after the new Constitution was adopted, Koirala resigned on October 10, 2015.
