Stevie Johnson Career

High school career

Johnson was homeschooled. Since the public school in his area, Angelo Rodriguez High School, didn't have a football program until his junior year, he was only able to play football two years. He received All-State and first-team All-Conference recognition for his senior year. He spent two years as a basketball player and was a second-team All-Conference selection.

College career

Johnson attended Chabot College in California from 2004 to 2005 before moving to Kentucky. He had 12 catches for 159 yards (13.3 avg) and 1 touchdown in his first season with the team. Johnson had three receptions for 67 yards against Clemson in the Music City Bowl.

Johnson's 2007 season was a memorable one for him, with 61 receptions for 1,052 yards (17.2 avg) and 13 touchdowns. He was the fourth player in school history to reach over 1,000 yards receiving and his thirteen touchdowns in a season that ranked second on the school's season-record list.

He had three game-winning touchdowns, one against Florida State in the Music City Bowl during the season, including one against Florida State.

After the season, Johnson was selected to the College Football News' All-Southeastern Conference first team.

Professional career

In the seventh round (224th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft, Johnson was drafted by the Buffalo Bills.

In Week 5, he received his first reception against the Arizona Cardinals, going for 8 yards. Johnson made his first touchdown reception against the New York Jets in Week 15, a two-yard pass from J. P. Losman. On a three-yard pass from Trent Edwards, he scored his second touchdown against the Denver Broncos a week later. Johnson had ten receptions for 102 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie season.

Johnson only had two catches for ten yards in the 2009 season due to a rib injury.

After good off-season preparations, Johnson was able to earn the starting receiver job before the 2010 season. With a string of good results, Ryan Fitzpatrick became quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick's new target after losing his starting position early in the season. Johnson had a career-game against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7, throwing 8 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown. With 11 for 145 yards against the Chicago Bears, he tied for his best catches in his career.

Johnson scored a fourth-quarter touchdown during Week 3 of the 2010 season at Gillette Stadium. He imitated a minuteman firing a rifle and collapsed to the ground backward, pretending to be shot after the score. Johnson was fined $10,000 for the occasion. He made 8 passes for 137 yards and a career-milestone 3 touchdowns in a Week 11 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Johnson lifted his jersey to answer the question, "Why so serious?" after his first touchdown. On his T-shirt, he wrote. Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco, who were referred to as Batman and Robin in The Batman movie sequel The Dark Knight, were filmed by The Joker in the Batman movie sequel The Dark Knight. Johnson was fined $5,000 by the league office for the occasion. Johnson blasted God on Twitter after losing what seemed to be a game winning pass that resulted in an overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in November.

In 2010, he had 82 receptions, 1073 yards, and ten touchdowns. Johnson was named as the 2010 Vizio Top Value Performer for outplaying his salary by the widest margin after the season.

Johnson's numbers dropped a bit in 2011, with 76 receptions for 1,004 yards and seven touchdown receptions. He had a torn groin and a broken hand throughout the year, according to Steve.

During the 2011 season, Johnson was banned twice for excessive celebrations. The first was against the New York Jets on Week 12. Johnson pretended to shoot his leg and then fly like a Jet and then crash, mocking Jets receiver Plaxico Burress. After scoring a touchdown, he raised his jersey to say, "Happy New Year!" during Week 17 against the New England Patriots. He was on his undershirt when he was written. He was given a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty, and head coach Chan Gailey then benched Johnson for the remainder of the game, bringing an end to his season.

Johnson signed a new 5-year contract with the Buffalo Bills worth $36.25 million, plus a signing bonus of $8.5 million, on March 5, 2012.

He had 79 receptions for 1,046 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2012, and stayed consistent with his figures. He was the only quarterback in the Buffalo Bills to have three straight 1,000 yards receiving seasons.

Johnson worked with new Bills quarterback EJ Manuel after being released Ryan Fitzpatrick prior to the season. In the closing seconds of a week 2 match against the Carolina Panthers, Manuel made the game-winning touchdown. Johnson had a rough night on his fourth straight 1,000-yard game, with 52 receptions for 597 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Bills traded Johnson to his hometown team, San Francisco 49ers, on May 9, 2014, after the Buffalo Bills acquired Sammy Watkins in the 2014 NFL Draft, a conditional fourth round pick in the 2015 draft that might have a third round pick.

Johnson recorded his lowest numbers since his sophomore season in 2014, totaling 35 receptions for 435 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson was released by the 49ers on March 15, 2015.

Johnson agreed to a three-year, $12 million contract with the San Diego Chargers on March 17, 2015. Johnson got off to a good start in 2015, but was plagued by recurring injuries later in the season. He had 45 receptions for 497 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season.

Johnson is expected to miss the entire 2016 season after undergoing surgery to repair his meniscus, according to the obituary.

The Chargers cut Johnson on March 7, 2017.
