Stephen R. Donaldson Life

Stephen Reeder Donaldson (born May 13, 1947) is an American fantasy, science fiction, and mystery novelist best known for his ten-novel fantasy book The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

His work is characterized by psychological complexity, conceptual abstraction, moral bleakness, and the use of an arcane word, and has received critical acclaim for its "imagination, vivid representations, and fast pace."

He earned his bachelor's degree from The College of Wooster and a Master's degree from Kent State University.

He now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is usually referred to as "Stephen Donaldson" in the United Kingdom (without the letter "R").

Personal life

Donaldson spent a portion of his youth in India, where his father, a medical missionary, worked with lepers. Donaldson attended what is now the Kodaikanal International School. At the time of the Kent State shootings on May 4, 1970, he was a graduate student at Kent State University. Despite being on campus at the time of the shootings, his apartment was one and a half blocks away, and he was forced to live under martial law for three days after. Although Donaldson finds the memories troubling, he does not like to address the event.

Donaldson, a classical musician, has said he "love[s] the clear manifestation of intense emotion in a beautiful sound." In 1994, he earned a black belt in Shotokan karate.
