Stefan Frei Career

Club career

Frei was named MVP at the 2009 MLS Player Combine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and he has signed a Generation Adidas contract. He was drafted by Toronto FC in the first round (13th overall) of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.

In Toronto's first game of the 2009 MLS season against the Kansas City Wizards, he made his professional debut on March 21, 2009, and soon established himself as the team's first choice goalkeeper. Frei was named Player of the Month for April 2009. Frei has also won MLS Save of the Week for week 15, and then three weeks in a row.

He appeared in three games of the 2009 Canadian Championship, going 3–0 and eventually making key saves in the deciding game that ensured Toronto FC would win by at least four goals on goal difference and their first trophy.

Frei was winless in a 2–0 home victory over Seattle Sounders FC on April 25, 2010. Frei was another standout performer in Toronto's first choice keeper during another stellar season. He ended the season with a 1.32 goals-against average and a 70% save percentage, up from his rookie season. Frei will graduate from the MLS Generation Adidas program at the end of the 2010 season, according to a statement on November 18, 2010.

Julian De Guzman, Dwayne De Rosario, and Stefan will be the key players of the forthcoming season, according to Aron Winter, who was impressed with Frei's abilities. In a 2–0 home victory over Portland Timbers on March 26, Frei recorded his first clean sheet of the 2011 season. Frei was also responsible for his third goal since being with Toronto, which was later named Goal of the Week in MLS. Coach Winter named Maicon Santos as the replacement captain after Dwayne De Rosario's resignation in early April, while Frei will become vice captain. Frei wore the captain's armband against Los Angeles Galaxy for the first time with Toronto due to a back injury to Santos; the game ended in a 0–0 home draw. Frei began most games in the first half of 2011, but suffered with injuries; after resting a few games, backup keeper Milo Koci put together some good results, creating a high-spirited atmosphere at the time. Frei will be training with Liverpool and returning to Toronto before pre-season training was announced at the end of the season.

Frei sat out the second leg after making his season debut against Los Angeles Galaxy on March 7th in the 2011–12 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals first leg, with Koci missing from the action. Many rumors of Frei being traded were circulating, but the following week, he sustained a fractured fibula during preparations. Frei will need to recover ligaments in his left ankle two weeks later, and he was supposed to miss four to six months, putting his entire season in jeopardy.

Frei entered the 2013 pre-season as the first choice keeper after a year of recovery. However, back-up Joe Bendik would get off to a minor injury in preparation, allowing him to start in the season opener. Bendik continued to put on good shows, causing coach Ryan Nelsen to stick with him. Frei made his first appearance in over a year in a Canadian Championship match against Montreal Impact on April 24, 2013; the game resulted in a 2–0 home win for Toronto.

Frei was traded to Seattle Sounders FC on December 10, 2013 in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.

Frei was one of the best goalkeepers in the league during the 2016 season, racking eight clean-sheets in 33 appearances (the joint fourth-most kept by a goalkeeper this season), as Seattle qualified for the playoffs after finishing fourth in the Western Conference. In the MLS Cup playoffs, he only conceded three goals, but he kept four clean sheets in six postseason games. Frei was named MLS Cup 2016 MVP after making seven saves in regular play and another in the 5–4 penalty shoot-out victory over his former club, Toronto, after a 0–0 draw after extra-time; his vital save on Jozy Altidore's header in the second half of extra-time was later described as "one of the finest saves in MLS Cup history," by MLSSoccer.com reporter Sam Stejskal.

Frei started 33 games over the year, with a 69.4 percent save percentage and averaging 1.09 goals against per game, while still maintaining 13 clean sheets, more than any other goalkeeper. Frei only made four saves en route to the MLS Cup final, but she kept four straight clean sheets as Seattle advanced to the final without losing a single point. Following a string of spectacular saves to keep the score level unchanged in the first hour of play, Frei started in the 2017 MLS Cup Final against his former club, Toronto FC, and the Canadian Championship; a rematch of the previous season's final; but he earned a treble of the MLS Cup, Supporters' Shield, and the Canadian Championship; and the upcoming treble of the MLS Cup, the Supporters' Shield, and the Canadian Championship; He came in third place in the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award, behind Tim Melia and Andre Blake. He came in second place in the competition this year, behind only Zack Steffen.

Frei was up for battle in the 2019 MLS Cup Final on November 10, 2019, which culminated in a 3–1 home win over Toronto FC.

Frei suffered a left knee injury in the 90th minute of an eventual 10 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on May 12th. The club later revealed that he had developed a blood clot as a result of the injury, and that the club would be "out for an undetermined length of time" during the 2021 season. Frei returned to the starting lineup on September 11th, defeating Minnesota United FC 11-0.

Frei returned to form in the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League. He made seven saves in the match's semifinal against New York City FC, many at a critical point-blank range throughout the game. Frei was named Best Player Award and Best Goalkeeper Award for defeating Club Nacional 3-0 in the second leg of the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League Final. In all eight games he played for Seattle, he had four clean sheets.

International career

Frei was a member of the Swiss U-15 national team.

By Bruce Arena, Frei was called into camp for the United States national team in January 2017. Frei became a resident of the United States in June 2017.

Seattle Sounders 0-0 LAFC: The MLS champions are unbeaten, but they do not have a chance to advance to the top of the West, but the Sounders are 0-0

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 18, 2023
The Seattle Sounders and LAFC fought to a 0-0 draw in Washington today as the reigning MLS champions remained undefeated to start the season. Seattle had 11 shots (four on target) and Los Angeles had 10 (three on goal), but neither team was able to find a breakthrough. Though LAFC lost for the first time this season, they'll nevertheless have a point to show for their solid team.

FC Cincinnati beat the Seattle Sounders on red card, and Paul Arriola's own-goal leads to draw

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 12, 2023
Brenner scored in the 63rd minute and FC Cincinnati overcame finishing a man down to give the visiting Seattle Sounders FC their first loss of the young season with a 1-0 victory on Saturday night. The Brazilian did not miss his second chance after Brenner crashed the side of the net following a Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei's injury. Following another Sounders' forfeiture, some nifty Cincinnati passing carried the ball to Brenner's foot, where a sprawling Frei did the job. It was his first goal of the season and he made it in the 63rd minute.

Al Ahly's 1-1: The Seattle Sounders: At Club World Cup, a heartbreak for the MLS franchise has arrived

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 4, 2023
In the cruelest fashion, the Seattle Sounders' hopes of playing giants Real Madrid at the FIFA Club World Cup were shattered. With the second round match against Al Ahly, the MLS team seemed to be on for extra time, with just minutes remaining. Mohamed Afsha's 88th minute strike knocked a defender off the field and into the net, inflicting the Sounders' heartbreak.
