I've been unable to stop watching this video of sixteen year old Nika Shakarami, who was found in a morgue by her family last week, with blunt force trauma injuries to her skull. Nika had been missing for ten days after attending one of the anti-government protests that have erupted across Iran, following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. Her last contact was a call to a friend, saying she was being followed by police. Mahsa Amini died in custody, after being arrested by "morality police" for wearing her hijab too loosely. Both young women's bodies bore injuries consistent with sustained, brutal attacks. According to Amnesty International, 16 year old Sarina Esmailzadeh was also killed when security forces beat her with batons at a protest in Gohardasht in Alborz province on the 23rd of September. These same forces said that Sarina had taken her own life, by jumping from a building. The Norway-based nonprofit Iran Human Rights, estimates that at least 154 people have been killed during protests across Iran since Mahsa's murder. Nika was in a punk band. She wore winged eyeliner and wrote poems. Her mother wasn't allowed to bury her; Nika's body was taken from the government morgue by security forces and she was buried in a crude grave on what would have been her 17th birthday. What happened to these vital young women is an atrocity. Please help amplify their voices and stories. #nikashakarami #mahsaamini #sarinaesmailzadeh
