Early life
Alek was born in Wau, Sudan (now South Sudan), in a two-bedroom house without electricity or running water, and he was the seventh of nine children. Akuol (b.) was her mother's daughter. 1946–1955) was a housewife and her father, Athian (1933–1985), was an education official. According to reports, her name means "Black Spotted Cow." Alek suffered with psoriasis from birth to age 14.
When the civil war in Wau broke out in 1985, the Wek family had to flee from both rebel and government forces. Athian's father suffered with a bike crash once more, and his hip was repaired with metal pins. Athian's hips became infected with long walks, and he became ill and suffered a haemorrhage after returning to Wau. He died at the home of a relative in Khartoum.

Wek was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 2009. She was in a twelve-year contract with Riccardo Sala, an Italian real estate developer, before being divorced in 2013. Ataui Deng, the runway model's aunt, is the aunt.
Career
Alek's psoriasis was cleared right away after arriving in London at the age of 14. She enrolled in the London College of Fashion and studied Fashion Business and Technology.
A Models 1 scout first discovered Alek at an outdoor market in Crystal Palace, London, in 1995. She appeared in Tina Turner's "GoldenEye" music video and then began fashion modeling shortly after. She was signed to Ford Models in 1996 and appeared in Janet Jackson's "Got 'Til It's Gone" music video that year. In 1997, MTV named her "Model of the Year" for the first African model to be on Elle's cover.
Alek has appeared in several well-known fashion magazines. Elle has appeared on the front pages of American, French, German, and South African Elle, as well as i-D, Cosmopolitan, Forbes Magazine Africa, and Ebony. She has also appeared in American and British Vogue editorials. As Sudanese princess Aquol, she made her acting debut in The Four Feathers in 2002. Alek walked for Marc Jacobs at Spring/Summer 2016 New York Fashion Week in September 2015, and then appeared in the label's Spring Summer 2016 campaign. In May 2016, she appeared on four special edition covers of Brazilian Elle.

"Wek 1933" is Alek's latest in a series of designer handbags, which are also available in selected Selfridges department stores. The year her father was born determines the name. The designs were inspired by her father's brass-clasp briefcase.
