Simon Frederick St George Kirke (born 28 July 1949) is an English rock drummer best known as a member of Free and Bad Company, the former of which has been the sole active member since its inception.
Life and career
Kirke was born in Lambeth, South London, the son of Olive May (née Pollard) and Percy Kirke, who married in 1948. Simon's father, who was from a junior branch of a Nottinghamshire landed gentry, descended on his mother's side from the Gibson-Craig baronets.
Kirke spent his youth in Wales' countryside. He returned to London and began looking for a drumming job in the burgeoning blues scene after leaving school at 17. After a fruitless 22 months, he was resigned to return to the country when he met Paul Kossoff, who was playing in a band called Black Cat Bones. Kirke was given the drumming job in the band and spent six months with Black Cat Bones.
Kirke and Paul Kossoff left the band, but Free would have been formed by Paul Rodgers and Andy Fraser. "All Right Now" was their top hit in more than 20 territories in 1990, and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers recognized them as having received more than 1 million radio plays in the United States by late 1989. When "All Right Now" reached 2,000,000 radio shows in the United Kingdom in 2000, a British music industry award was given to Paul Rodgers by the British music industry.
Free had reformed by April 1972 with Andy Fraser and Paul Rodgers making peace, but Kossoff seemed to pull it together if only for a brief period. During the US tour to promote the original quartet's Last Album, Kossoff revived taking drugs. Fraser performed with Rodgers and then left the band but Tetsu Yamauchi took over. Rodgers and Kirke were selected to fill out the band with John "Rabbit" Bundrick as a member of Free for the tour and the last Free album, Heartbreaker. Kirke and Rodgers joined up in 1973 to form Bad Company, following the disbandment of Free. (King Crimson) and guitarist Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople) joined them.
Kirke joined Wildlife after Bad Company disbanded in 1982. Around this time in the United Kingdom, they toured in favour of the Michael Schenker Group. Wildlife's self-titled album was mainly written by Steve and Chris Overland, produced by former Bad Company bandmate Ralphs, and starred Kirke as their drummer (and saxophonist on his self-written song "Charity." Despite being signed to Led Zeppelin's label, Swan Song Records, and Kirke's high-profile participation, the album did not sell. With the band FM, the core members, Chris and Steve Overland, went on to greater success.
Kirke was a member of Bad Company when the band reformed in 1986. In addition to appearing with Ringo Starr's All Star Band on three occasions, he is a natural songwriter, debuting Seven Rays of Hope in 2005. In 2009, he appeared with Bad Company. He has been playing with Zeta Vang, a New York City rock band, as a side project.
Kirke is a member of the United States Academy Awards Committee, and it supports adolescents in recovering from heroin use. Domino, Jemima, and Lola Kirke live in Manhattan, with his partner Maria Angelica Kirke. He had a son named Marissa Creager, Simon St George Creager, who suffered from severe cerebral palsy, who died in 2017 at the age of 19.
