Croatia showed their knockout experience and defeated Japan 3-1 on penalties on Monday to advance to the World Cup quarter-finals. After beating Denmark and Russia in shoot-outs on their way to the 2018 final, the Croats maintained their composure to book a spot in the last eight alongside Holland, Argentina, France, and England, who qualified this weekend. Before Ivan Perisic stepped over the scoreboard in the 55th minute, Daizen Maeda fired a bullet header past Shuichi Gonda between the posts, the Japanese were able to see them.

As Japan takes on Croatia in the last-16 on Monday, they will attempt to make history by making the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time. Japan appeared to have their work cut out to reach the knockout stages after being placed in a consortium with Spain and Germany, but they did win both European giants, despite losing to Costa Rica in between. It's been far from simple for Japan to progress to this round, and the two nations will be desperate for their fairytale run to continue.
