Career
Murdock's native Toledo began performing gospel music. Roger Troutman, a singer-musician, recruited Murdock as a back-up singer for his family's band Zapp, which had multiple hits on Warner Bros (and its Reprise Records imprint). Troutman, based on this success, began recording tracks with Murdock and lead singer Sugarfoot of the Ohio Players, among others, at his Dayton-based recording studio, Troutman Sound Labs. "Girl, Cut It Out," Murdock and Troutman's first chart single, was released as Roger (featuring Shirley Murdock), which charted at number 79 R&B in early 1985.
Murdock has signed to Elektra Records and published "No More," written by Shirley Murdock and Gregory Jackson (Cincinnati, Ohio funk keyboardist and member of Zapp), which made it to the top 24 R&B in early 1986. "As We Lay," written by Zapp's Larry Troutman and keyboardist Billy Beck (of the Ohio Players), was her signature hit. In 1986, the tender, melancholy ballad made it to the R&B Top Ten and ranked at number 23 on the adult contemporary chart, peaking at number 21 pop and number 21. Her debut album went gold, and she was aided by the follow-up hits "Go on Without You" and "Be Free." She also released albums in 1988 (A Woman's Perspective) and 1991 (Let There Be Love). Murdock performed Be Careful What You Pray For with Cuba Gooding, Sr., and David Peaston in early 2000.
Murdock's debut album, Home, on T.D., came in 2002. The Dexterity Sounds record label was used by Jakes. In the film Sweating in the Spirit, she made her acting debut. Murdock's most recent album, released in March 2007, was signed to Tyscot Records.
Murdock co-produced "Soldier," a Marie's album Congo Square track, in 2009. She appeared in Johnny Gill, Robin Givens, and Jermaine Crawford's 2009 stage play A Mother's Prayer. She appeared in "A Mother's Love," a stage play directed by Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker in 2014.
