Shinya Career

1997–1999: Early career

The independent rock band La:Sadie's, which featured four of Dir En Grey's members before disbanding, preceded Dir En Grey. They disbanded due to leader and bassist Kisaki's decision not to debut because it was too soon, but guitarist Kaoru said they were excited for it. Toshiya, a member of Kisaki, members Kaoru, Kyo, Die, and Shinya, have reformed as a new band after parting ways with Kisaki, members Kaoru, Kyo, Die, and Shinya. They officially formed "Dir en grey" on February 2, 1997 after appearing at one show as a Kuroyume cover-band called DEATHMASK at the live house Nagano J on January 24.

The band's name is a blend of German "dir," French "en," and English "grey" and was thought to refer to "Grey Silver Coin" (, Haiiro no Ginka); the Japanese translation was used as the name of their fanclub's newspaper. They wanted to create a black and white musical image, so they went for grey. In a prompt interview, singer Kyo revealed that he knew the name before the band was formed. Kaoru explains that they borrowed the name of another band that was well known at the time in 2020 during the WOWOW Special. This band, La Lavelle, had released "Dir en Gray" in 1995, but it had no name. The song begins with the word'dir en gray', with the Latin portion being a correct translation of the Japanese part. Both translate to "you in the black." In a subsequent interview, Kaoru said that "at the time we chose the band name, it had some significance," but that right now it doesn't mean anything specific." We chose the band name because it sounded right, and it also depicts a brand that perhaps doesn't exist elsewhere."

Missa's first EP was released a few months later and attracted mainstream attention in 1998 by establishing the top ten on the Oricon music charts with the still independently produced songs "Jealous" and "Ill-." During the first half of 1999, five subsequent singles, arranged and produced by X Japan co-founder Yoshiki Hayashi, were released. Gauze was the band's first full-length record, which was followed by a split. One of the album's support shows (filmed at the Osaka-jo Hall) will be released on VHS and DVD later this year.

Kyo, the vocalist, was hospitalized with hearing loss, and many dates of the tour in support of Dir En Grey's then-upcoming album, Macabre, had to be postponed. Tour 00 >> 01 Macabre died later this year and was released at Nippon Budokan shortly after the single "Ain't Afraid to Die" was announced in April 2001.

Kisou, Diren Grey's first international appearances followed by their release of their third full-length album, ranging China, Taiwan, and South Korea. The last dates of Rettou Gekishin Angya tour were already in favor of the band's second EP, Six Ugly, as it was reenacted in Japan. They released the single "Child Prey," the second opening theme of Baki the Grappler's anime series, as well as the start of their fourth album, Vulgar. Dir En Grey appeared at Akasaka Blitz for five nights in a row, with each show (except the first) themed after a particular genre, the first featuring songs from the then-defunct Vulgar.
