Shawnee Smith Career

Career

Smith began acting as an infant, appearing on stage in A Christmas Carol repertory from ages 8 to 11, and appeared in a stage play with Richard Dreyfuss at age 15. On her 37th birthday, she appeared in the original stage version of To Gillian, receiving the Dramatic Critics Award for her role, becoming the youngest actress to receive such a distinction at this time. In 1981, she made her television debut in a McDonald's commercial titled "Best Friends."

She joined the Screen Actors Guild at the age of nine and made her debut in John Huston's 1982 version of Annie Bennett Warbucks' Annie as one of Annie Bennett Warbucks' fellow orphanage. In 1985, she co-starred in two melodramas, Not My Kid and Crime of Innocence, as well as a small part in Iron Eagle (1986). Smith co-starred in Summer School as pregnant student Rhonda Altobello in 1987. She appeared in the 1988 remake of The Blob, as well as Cheryl Ladd's film Bluegrass.

In the 1989 film Who's Harry Crumb? Smith played a wealthy teen who assists Harry Crumb in finding her missing sister. In the short-lived television series Brand New Life, she co-starred with Jennie Garth and Barbara Eden in the same year. She costarred in Michael Cimino's reimagining of the thriller Desperate Hours over the next year. She took a three-year break from acting in the early 1990s, mainly because she had outgrown teenage roles and had a difficult time finding jobs. Julie Lawry appeared in The Stand, a Stephen King-based book, and she had a small role in the film Leaving Las Vegas in 1994.

Linda in Becker appeared from 1998 to 2004. She appeared on several television shows, including Cagney & Lacey, Murder, She Wrote, The X-Files, Players, and Los Angeles. Vivian Porter appeared on an episode of the Disney cartoon Kim Possible in 2003.

Smith became known for her role as Amanda Young in the Saw films. Due to the number of horror films in which she has appeared, she has been dubbed a "scream queen." The producers revealed that her scenes were shot while fighting a serious case of the flu in the DVD version of Saw. In the DVD commentary of Saw II, she was revealed to be four months pregnant with her second child while filming. Except for director Darren Lynn Bousman, her pregnancy was kept a mystery from everyone else. In the commentary, Smith's daughter Verve mistakenly told him about the pregnancy while filming.

Smith has claimed that although she appears in Saw IV and Saw V for a brief period, she was never on stage. Any scenes involving her were cut from a file video. On March 20, 2009, producer Mark Burg issued a statement announcing that Smith will be in Saw VI. She debuted in Toronto on March 31, 2009, to film new flashback sequences. She confessed to having a difficult time seeing the Saw films or horror movies in general. Amanda Young's role was initially dismissed because it was so sad to her. She had seen Leigh Whannell and James Wan's eight-minute short film Saw by turning down her role and then changed her mind after being told the role for the second time.

Smith made a brief appearance in Repo's 10-minute short film trailer in 2006. Bousman's Genetic Opera was also directed by Bousman. Heather Sweet, Rotti Largo's surgical addict daughter, was Smith's character. The trailer was shot in Toronto, Ontario, and it was an improvement on the stage version. After finishing Saw III, Bousman filmed the trailer to try to pitch the concept to film producers. Smith did not reprise her role as Heather Sweet when Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures picked up the film in 2007; she was replaced by Paris Hilton.

Smith appeared in FEARnet's original series 30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust in 2008. In six webisodes as well as behind-the-scenes clips, the series premiered on FEARnet.com on July 17, 2008. This series is a continuation of the first webisode film 30 Days of Night: Blood Trails. This was her first appearance in this series. Smith was the host and one of three mentors on the VH1 reality show Scream Queens, which aired from October 20, 2008 to December 8, 2008. Smith did not return as host and mentor for season two due to scheduling conflicts; she was replaced by Jaime King.

In 2009, Smith appeared in The Grudge 3 as Dr. Sullivan, a child psychiatrist. On May 12, 2009, the film was converted from DVD to DVD. On August 30, 2010, she appeared on The Secret Life of the American Teenager as a guest star. It was her first television appearance since the Scream Queens aired in 2008. On September 29, 2010, she appeared in the premiere of Law & Order: Los Angeles. In the TV series Anger Management, Smith played Jennifer Goodson, the ex-wife of Charlie Sheen's character.

Smith & Pyle, actress Missi Pyle, was a member of a country rock music band called Smith & Pyle. The two actresses met while filming an ABC comedy pilot named Traveling in Packs. Since Smith invited Pyle to join her in the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the band was born. The pair formed a band.

In July 2008, the band's first album, It's OK to Be Happy, was released digitally by iTunes and Amazon.com. Chris Goss produced Joshua Tree, California, and it was their debut album. Smith and Pyle became business partners and established Urban Prairie Records, their own record store.

In 2011, the two bands disbanded before a new album was released. When promoting Anger Management in 2013, she said that she had come to a point where she needed to concentrate on her children and television production.

Smith appeared on the soundtrack of Saw III as a solo vocalist and to the soundtrack for Catacombs as a solo vocalist. Her voice was also included in the film Carnival of Souls, where Sandra performed "I Fear" a jazz song.

In the early 2000s, Smith fronted punk/metal band Fydolla Ho (the name coming from the Chris Rock character in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988). Smith, Suicidencies bassist Robert Trujillo, Suicidencies guitarist Rick Battson, and Skindred vocalist Benji Webbe were among the group's early recordings. In December 2001, the band unveiled their debut full-length album, Untied. On Becker's behalf, she balanced the band with being a regular cast member. In 2004, the band officially ended.

Smith started working on a solo album with producer Chris Goss in 2004, but the project was never completed. "I'm finding time to listen to music for a while" in an interview with Radio Free in October 2005. After Jesse Hughes overheard her performing the song in a studio toilet, she sang of Steve Miller Band's "Abracadabra" by Eagles of Death Metal. This cover was first published in 2019.
