Shawn Thornton Career

Playing career

Thornton played minor hockey for his hometown Oshawa Minor Generals of the Eastern AAA League in the OMHA's Eastern AAA League. In the 1995 OHL Priority Selection, he was drafted in the 9th round (145th overall) by the Peterborough Petes.

Thornton attempted to be drafted in the 1996 NHL draft but was not chosen by any team. Thornton was drafted into the NHL by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1997, his 190th appearance in the league, but he was cut to the Chicago Blackhawks in 2001. Thornton won his first Stanley Cup in his final season with the Ducks in 2006–07.

Thornton and the Boston Bruins announced a three-year, 1.5 million dollar contract on July 1, 2007. Thornton captured his second Stanley Cup appearance in Boston during the 2010–11 season, in which he also earned record highs in goals (10), assists (10), and +/– (8).

The Bruins told Thornton that they would not be re-signing him, ending his career in Boston at the end of the 2013–14 season. He signed a two-year deal with the Florida Panthers in the summer. He re-signed with Florida for one year at the end of his deal.

Thornton announced on April 6, 2017, that he would be retiring at the end of the season, and played his last game on April 8. During his announcement of his retirement, he revealed that after the conclusion of his playing career, he would join the Panthers' front office in a career related role.

Thornton broke into combat early in the first period after Orpik struck Boston's Loui Eriksson early in the first period. Orpik rebuffed Thornton's call and, at 11:06 of the first period, Thornton stepped over a thicket of players from both teams, including Penguins winger Brad Marchand in the head, slew-footed Orpik from behind, and while Orpik was on the ice, Torpik punched him at least twice. He was suspended after an in-person interview with the league's department of player safety. He appealed the suspension and had a hearing with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on Friday, who did not immediately announce a decision. Thornton was suspended for fifteen games on December 14, 2013. Thornton, who was ill after the game, called Orpik specifically to apologize. Orpik expressed forgiveness and compassion. Thornton and Orpik, as friends, were part of a group of players who had played out together in the offseason and during the NHL lockout.
