Champagne-loving conman who posed as millionaire playboy claiming he was buying £2m Grand Designs home to swindle pensioners out of £275,000 while living in rented caravan on handouts from his mother is jailed for seven years

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 22, 2023
Layne Perry, 39, brought one of his victims to view Kemeys Folly in South Wales, which appeared on Channel 4's Grand Designs in 2009 and is currently listed for £1.85 million (inset photo). He told a newly widowed hotelier that he was buying a country estate in Gloucestershire, where she could live out of her days rent free. Perry claims to have worked with merchant bankers Close Brothers and payment processing firm Global Payments UK. He told the court that he made more money as a professional gambler and boasted that he has more money per year than the prosecuting barrister. Perry, of South Kensington, London, was found guilty of 23 charges of fraud involving £275,000 of his victims' money and loans taken out in their names. Prosecutor Emma Harris shared how Perry befriended Charles Gwilliam and his wife Val at livery stables in Bridgend, South Wales, where they kept three horses. Perry took out loans in their name and applied for credit cards in their name,' she said. He posed as the Gwilliams and gained a £76,000 gain at various financial institutions.'
