Melvin Shane Sparks (born June 25, 1969) is a hip-hop choreographer best known for his work as a choreographer on So You Think You Can Dance and judge on America's Best Dance Crew.

Early life

Sparks was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the youngest of three children born to Melvin and Wanda Sparks, both officers in the police force. Sparks spent some time in the hospital after his birth due to scoliosis. He became interested in dance at the age of 11 when he started performing in talent shows. His interest in teaching became apparent when he started offering dance lessons from his own backyard. Dance became extremely important to Sparks after his sister's boyfriend was murdered, as it became a way for him to escape and feel safe.

Career

Sparks left his hometown in 1993 to move to Los Angeles. He began making a name for himself as a choreographer. Several projects, including the feature film You Got Served and Fox's hit TV show So You Think You Can Dance, ignited a fire and are a force to reckon with. His solid resume and honors today represent his deep love for dance, and audiences of all ages and races adore his style of dance and suave attitude.

Sparks knew his ability and gift was dance from a young age. He was given the opportunity to substitute a hip-hop class at the Millennium Dance Complex, formerly known as Moro Landis, located in Los Angeles' North Hollywood Arts District, three months after he moved to Los Angeles. He was soon to be a guide in this hip-hop group. When the teacher departed, he took over the entire class. His class grew from three students to a record high of 175 students due to his talent as a teacher and dancer.

Sparks is best known for being one of the judges and choreographers on So You Think You Can Dance's reality dance competition, So You Think You Can Dance. Gaynor accepted the role, according to a TV Guide.

The exhibition includes a large number of American and international dance styles, including classical, modern, ballroom, hip-hop, strip, club, jazz, and musical theater styles, among others, with several subgenres included in the categories.

Sparks was a judge on MTV's dance competition reality show America's Best Dance Crew from seasons 1 to 4. Due to his detention, he did not return to judge for the fifth season. Sparks were replaced by singer Omarion during season 5; Since season 5, Omarion has left, he may prefer to concentrate on his music career. In season 6, D-Trix from Quest took over as the third judge.
