Sergio Fajardo Valderrama (Spanish pronunciation: [sexjo faalderama]; born 19 June 1956) is a Colombian politician and mathematician. Fajardo served as the Governor of Antioquia from 2012 to 2016. He began campaigning in 2003, when he was elected Mayor of Medellin, Colombia's second-largest city and Antioquia's capital. After losing the runoff against Juan Manuel Santos and Angelino Garzon, Fajardo, the vice presidential candidate of Antanas Mockus in 2010, ending in second place. Fajardo refers to himself as a pragmatic politician with no particular ideology, with political analysts and media outlets in Colombia identifying him as a centrist politician not linked to Colombia's traditional opposition parties.
Fajardo declared his candidacy in the forthcoming 2018 elections in July 2017. Fajardo came third in the first round of the 2018 Colombian presidential race. Early life and education
Fajardo was born and raised in Medelln, Colombia. He graduated (high school) from the Colegio Benedictino and then moved to Bogotá to earn an undergraduate and a graduate degree (M.Sc.). Career
Fajardo taught mathematical logic at the Universidad de los Andes and the Universidad Nacional of Colombia, as well as other bodies, including the National Council of Sciences and the Peace Commission in Antioquia, before entering politics at the age of 40.
Fajardo was elected as Medell's first independent mayor in 2003. During his four-year tenure, he forged a major change in the city, for which he was named best mayor of Colombia in 2007 and has also been recognized for other national and international awards.
Fajardo, a fellow independent politician and mathematician, was vice presidential nominee in 2010 with Antanas Mockus, a mathetician and mathematician. He served as governor of Antioquia from 2012 to 2015.
