Peter Shumlin Life

Peter Elliott Shumlin (born March 24, 1956) is an American politician from Vermont.

He served as the 81st Governor of Vermont from 2011 to 2017.

He was first elected to the office in 2010 and was reelected to a second term in 2012.

He received a small majority in his reelection bid in 2014, but not to the extent of Vermont's Constitution.

In those cases, the Vermont General Assembly chooses the winner.

The legislature almost always selects the candidate who receives a plurality; this was not the case; the General Assembly re-elected Shumlin to a third term by a vote of 110–69 in January 2015.

Shumlin declared in June 2015 that he did not seek re-election in 2016.

During his tenure as governor, he has passed legislation on physician-assisted suicide as well as the United States' first genetically modified food labeling law.

During his first two terms, he was president of the Democratic Governors Association.

He served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1990 to 1993, and then represented the Windham District in the Vermont Senate from 1993 to 2011.

In 2002, he was the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Vermont.

Personal life

Shumlin was married to Deborah Holway from 1989 to 2013; they now have two children together.

Shumlin revealed his engagement to Kate Hunt in September 2015. They married in December 2015 in a ceremony at their East Montpelier home.

Shumlin was involved in a real estate purchase in May 2013, which caused controversy. Shumlin's East Montpelier home, a neighbor, owed back taxes and hoped to forfeit the property in a tax foreclosure, causing Shumlin to consider buying the house. Shumlin bought the house, had the assessed value reduced because the house was in disrepair, paid the back taxes, paid the neighbor's back child care, and allowed the neighbor to remain in the house for many months. The neighbor had second thoughts about the purchase then. Shumlin agreed to let the neighbor repurchase the home after some outrage in the press.
