Sergi Roberto Career

Club career

Sergi Roberto, a native of Reus, Tarragona, Catalonia, started playing football with local UE Barri Santes Creus at the age of 8, transferring to Barcelona's youth academy six years later from neighbor Gimnàstic de Tarragona. He appeared with Barça's reserves for the first time in 2009-2010, making 29 appearances when they returned to the Segunda División after 11 years.

Roberto made his debut for the first team on November 10th, defeating Ceuta in the second half of the campaign's Copa del Rey (7–1 on aggregate). He made his first UEFA Champions League appearance on April 27th, playing as a replacement for David Villa in the last minute of a 2–0 away victory over Real Madrid in the competition's first leg.

Roberto made his La Liga debut on May 21, 2011 defeating Málaga by 3-1 margin in the season's last round. Pep Guardiola rested all his starters for the upcoming El Clásico on Sunday, winning by a whopping 4–0 home victory in his first appearance for the main squad against BATE Borisov in the Champions League group stage.

Roberto scored his second goal in only his third official appearance for Barcelona's first team on January 12, 2012, helping the visitors come from behind to win 2–1 over Osasuna in the domestic cup (6–1 on aggregate). He netted another on December 16, 2014, contributing to Huesca's 8-1 demolition at the Camp Nou.

Roberto was a right-back in several games in the 2015–16 season, after being reconverted by boss Luis Enrique and barely months after being declared surplus to requirements. He appeared on the other flank in two consecutive games against Athletic Bilbao in January 2016, one in the league and another in the Spanish Cup, replacing injured Jordi Alba, and then moving on to play in up to seven different positions.

Roberto got off to a right-back and gave two assists in a 6–2 home loss to Betis in the campaign's first match. He returned two decisive passes in a 5–0 away victory over Sporting de Gijón on September 24 from the same position on September 24.

In the second leg of the Champions League round-of-16, Roberto scored his final goal in the 95th minute in the second leg of the competition on Monday, making Barcelona the first club to overcome a four-goal deficit in the tournament. He began his employment on February 22, 2018 and lasted until 2022.

Roberto was given a straight red card after punching Marcelo in an eventual 2–2 home draw in the first half of El Clásico on May 6, 2018. He was first-choice right-back during the season, ahead of signing Nélson Semedo for the first time and his team gained the national championship after a one-year wait.

International career

Sergi Roberto was called by the Spain under-17 team in October 2009, just after making his Barcelona B debut, for the 2009 FIFA World Cup in Nigeria. He scored a hat-trick against Burkina Faso at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on November 5th, before being called to Javier Espinosa in the 88th minute. Spain ended third in the tournament, with him and Atlético Madrid's Borja Bastón accounting for eight of the team's total goals.

Roberto made his under-21 debut on September 5, 2011, with the last four minutes of the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifiers in Lugo over Georgia. In March 2016, he was called up to the senior squad for friendlies against Romania and Italy. On the 27th of August, his debut took place in the former match in Cluj-Napoca, where he began in a 0–0 draw.

Andres Iniesta played scrabble on a chess board... here's why the Spain and Barcelona legend will go down in history as the greatest of them all

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 8, 2024
A documentary was made about Andres Iniesta four years ago that perfectly encapsulated why he will always be remembered as the greatest player in Spain's long list of footballing legends.  'Andres Iniesta: The unexpected hero,' was the title, and the description was just as accurate. 'The story of a normal person, who does extraordinary things. Someone who pursues and achieves triumphs through taking care of the small details.' Quiet, shy and thoughtful, he kept out of the headlines and just went about his business. It's hard to really think of anyone having ever been so good at something, and yet staying so humble.

Revealed: How Barcelona legend Xavi explained his shock decision to quit as manager in emotional dressing room speech

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 1, 2024
New footage has revealed how Barcelona legend Xavi explained his decision to step down as manager last year to the Catalan giants' squad. Xavi had made the shock announcement at a press conference in January that he would leave at the end of the season. The press conference had followed Barcelona suffering a 5-3 home defeat to Villarreal, which saw the defending champions fall 10 points behind rivals Real Madrid in La Liga.

Cesc Fabregas 'could be EVICTED from luxury Swiss apartment because he owes £30,000 in rent and bills and has not responded to repeated warnings'

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 16, 2024
The Spaniard has allegedly been silent amid the landlord's repeated warnings and is being taken to court over 34,000 Swiss francs unpaid in rent and bills. It marks an alarming episode for Fabregas, who is the manager of new Serie A side Como over the border and sitting in the relegation zone after four games. He, his family, and his cats - now at threat of being homeless - are staying in a lakeside apartment in the town of Bissone, which is around a 40-minute drive from Como.
