Michael Scott Shannon (born July 25, 1947) is a radio jockey who appears on WCBS-FM in New York City as well as Scott Shannon Presents America's Greatest Hits, which is syndicated nationally with United Stations Radio Networks and Entercom.
He appeared on WHTZ, WPLJ, The True Oldies Channel, and The Sean Hannity Show.
Early radio career
Shannon, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, grew up an Army brat in Indianapolis, Indiana. He began his radio service at WFBS (1450 AM) in Spring Lake, North Carolina, (later WMRV). From there he rose to WCLS (1580 AM) in Columbus, Georgia. Shannon spent full time in radio at WABB in Mobile, Alabama, where he obtained the nickname Super Shan.
After a brief stint at WMPS in Memphis, he migrated to Nashville, where he was the evening disc jockey at WMAK (1300 AM), and later became the station's program manager. Shannon and Neil Young's film Journey Through the Past were captured on WMAK's website, as well as an interview.
Record-promotion career
Shannon left Nashville to work as a record promoter with Casablanca Records, and she and Jack Grochmal released an album together in 1977 (Stack-A-Track) Grochmal. They achieved a number-49 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 remaking a 1959 Jerry Keller song "Here Comes Summer." As program director of WPGC-FM, Scott returned to radio in Washington, D.C., taking the station to the top-one position in Arbitron rankings. He then moved to WQXI in Atlanta. While at WRBQ-FM, a station known as "Q105," then and partner Cleveland Wheeler developed the morning zoo radio style. He dominated the charts once more, this time making his show one of the most listened to in the United States. He was also responsible for the revival of vocalist Charlene's career, whose song "I've Never Been to Me" was revived by his programming of the long-dormant track.
Shannon also hosted "Where are they now?" Benny Mardones, a one-hit wonder who had the 1980 hit "Into the Night," was the subject of the radio program in 1989. Scott introduced the song to rotation in 1989, and soon after, a number of other DJs around the country added the song to their playlists. The song re-entered the top 20 singles chart, sparking a revival in Mardones' career, including a new re-recording of the song, a tour, and a new album.
