He is best known as the screenwriter and director of Shine, the Oscar-winning biopic of pianist David Helfgott.

In addition to receiving an Emmy Award, Hicks' work has been nominated for an Academy Award.

Stephen King's Hearts film adaptations in Atlantis and Nicholas Sparks' The Lucky One were two other films he directed.

In a new documentary directed by renowned Shine producer Scott Hicks, Daniel Johns will talk about his 'noisy brain' and suffering from synaesthesia. In The Musical Mind, a film that explores the creative processes of famous neurodivergent musicians, the former Silverchair frontman, 44, will discuss extensively about his illness. 'I'm not trying to be concerned because I'm not, but my head is thumping, and it has always has been since I was a child,' Johns says in a trailer.
