Sananda Francesco Maitreya (born Terence Trent Howard, March 15, 1962), better known by his former stage name Terence Trent D'Arby, is an American singer and songwriter who came to fame with his debut studio album, Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby (1987).

The album included the hit singles "If You Let Me Stay", "Dance Little Sister" "Sign Your Name" and "Wishing Well"; "Wishing Well" became a number one hit.

Early life

Terence Trent D'Arby was born Terence Trent Howard in Manhattan in 1962. His mother is Frances Howard, a gospel singer, teacher and counselor. Frances Howard married Bishop James Benjamin Darby, who became his stepfather and raised him. He took this stepfather's last name and later added the apostrophe.

He trained as a boxer in Orlando and in 1980 won the Florida Golden Gloves lightweight championship. He received an offer to attend boxing school in the United States Army, but went to college instead. After enrolling at the University of Central Florida, he quit a year later and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was posted at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and then served in the 3rd Armored Division, near Frankfurt, West Germany. He was formally court-martialed and dishonorably discharged by the army in April 1983 after going absent without leave. While in West Germany, he worked as a band leader with the band The Touch, releasing an album of material called Love on Time (1984). It was later re-issued in 1989 as Early Works after his worldwide success as a solo artist. In 1986, he left West Germany for London, where he briefly played with The Bojangles. In London, he signed a recording contract with CBS Records.

Terence Trent D'Arby Career

Later career as Sananda Maitreya

On October 4, 2001, D'Arby legally changed his name to Sananda Maitreya, meaning, "Terence Trent D'Arby died while he died a noble death." "I meditated for a new spirit, a new life, and a new identity" after the intense pain. Maitreya has confirmed that his name change resulted from a string of wishes he had in 1995. Maitreya explained that the word does not have any religious significance, and that it means "rebirth" in Sanskrit. Snanda () means 'possessed of joy,' and maitreya () means 'friendly, loving, benevolent.'

Maitreya has released nine studio albums and four live albums from 2001 to 2021.

The Wildcard album was released in 2001. The album, which was first available for download from the artist's official website, received a lot of praise from international critics, particularly for its single, "O Divina." Maitreya began in 2002 in Milan for passion, where he married Italian Architect and TV presenter Francesca Francone in 2003 and began his sixth project, Angels & Vampires – Volume I. The artist started to post the project on the official website in chapters as the recordings progressed and then came out in Mp3 form on June 29, 2005.

Maitreya's second volume, Angels & Vampires - Volume II, began in July 2005 and divided the division into chapters. The second mastered volume is published on April 29, 2006. The Angels & Vampires album features 40 songs, including a recreation of "Angie," a salute to the Rolling Stones. Post Millennium Rock is the album's sub-genre. Maitreya performed all the instruments on the album and entirely designed, wrote and arranged the entire project by himself.

In 2007, three of his songs were performed in Judd Apatow's film Knocked Up.

Following the 2007 European tour, new concerts followed in 2008 and television participation in the 2008 Christmas Festival. Maitreya has released four live albums from 2007 to 2012: Influenza in Firenze, Lovers & Fighters, and Confessions of a Zooathaholic; a collection of the best songs from live concerts and tours performed in the same year.

Nigor Mortis was released in 2008 by Maitreya, which followed the same evolutionary process as Angels and Vampires. During the releases, the album was first released in chapters, but in the mastered version, it's now available on CD and MP3 at the link to his website. In March 2011, the Sphinx album was released; in the same month, The artist's live album dedicated to the 2010 concerts of The Sphinx and Confessions of a Zooathaholic were released.

Return to Zooathalon was announced in March 2013 and followed by two albums The Rise of the Zugebrian Time Lords in 2015. Proheus & Pandora, 53 songs divided into three volumes, was the artist's claim that the album has become so beloved and touching because it has been written in music. David Bowie, Prince George Michael, and Tom Petty were among the artists who performed Protest for the loss of his great friends and fans, as well as others.

Some Sake in Osaka, Japan's latest live album, was released in December 2020, showcasing his legendary American band's Japan tour.

Maitreya's PlayHouse, the project's 12th studio album, which featured three collaborations; "Reflecting Sun" by Irene Grandi; and "Pandora's Plight" with jazz pianist Antonio Fara. "Prince" is an instrumental song that honors Maitreya and Prince's friendship.

He appeared on Calvin Harris' new Love Regenerator album "Lonely" (a record that Harris produced with Italian singer Riva Starr), and his vocals came from 1989's "I Want to Be with Someone Tonight."

Film career

Maitreya has appeared in two films and in the TV mini-series Shake, Rattle, and Roll: An American Love Story, in which he appeared as Jackie Wilson.
