Sam Sexton Career

Professional career

Sexton started his career in September 2005 in Norwich, where he defeated Paul Bonson over six rounds at Carrow Road. He ended up compiling a record of 7-0 before being defeated by former ABA champion Derek Chisora at the York Hall. In the last round, the referee called the match to a halt with 26 seconds. "Maybe the occasion got to me," a distraught Sexton said after the war. I'm not sure what I'm missing. I'll go back and watch the fight likely have a week off. I'll be back in straight. I didn't feel well enough, but I wasn't about to make excuses. I boxed, I lost, but that's just the way it is."

Sexton was involved in the "prizefighter" tournament in Newcastle upon Tyne on September 12, 2008. He defeated Pelé Reid in the quarter-final and Luke Simpkin in the semi-final, both by unanimous vote. The final round saw Sexton defeat Chris Burton, the only boxer with an unbeaten career record, before the match was put down 2:10 by Sexton. Sexton described his elation at winning the tournament and winning the £25,000 top award: "This is by far my best moment in boxing." I've been representing England, and that was fantastic boxing for my country, but this is something entirely different. I'm not sure I'm far off a British title shot now, but I'm sure I'm not far off from one, and I'll see what I get offered. I'm hoping to be boxing for the British title as soon as possible."

Following the tournament, Sexton returned to the ring in November in order to qualify for his first professional title, the Southern Area Championship. Colin Kenna was arrested in the 6th round of the opposing team, allowing Sexton his first professional belt.

On May 15, Sexton met Martin Rogan for his first defense of the Commonwealth heavyweight crown. After the doctor found that Rogan was unfit to continue in the 8th round due to a closed eye, Sexton defeated Rogan, his first professional defeat.

On the 6th of November, Rogan was stopped in a rematch to keep his crown. Before the 7th round, Rogan's side threw in the towel, winning Sexton. When interviewed later, Rogan cited a neck injury that had prevented him from using his left arm as the reason for his dismissal by his corner.

Sexton had intended to face Danny Williams for the British championship at Wembley Arena on February 13, 2010, but had to cancel due to a hand injury. The brawl was rescheduled for May, but Sexton cried out after his mother sustained a brain aneurysm and was replaced by Derek Chisora. On September 18, Sexton fought for the British title, matched up against Derek Chisora. Sexton was refused in the ninth round of his title defense after losing his second defense of his title.

Sexton's David Price was defeated by a fourth-round KO on May 19th, 2012, in a contest for the vacant British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles. Since Tyson Fury vacated in order to step up, the BBB ofC ordered the brawl on February 9th. Price ruled the game with his jab and distance, causing Sexton's backlash when he connected. Price knocked Sexton out cold in the fourth round.

Sexton beat Gary Cornish by a unanimous vote on October 6th and took the vacant British trophy at Edinburgh's Meadowbank Sports Centre.

Sexton and Infinitum announced on Sunday that he and Hennessy Sports will make their first defense of the British heavyweight title at Macron Stadium's Premier Suite in Bolton against Hughie Fury, live and exclusive on Channel 5. This will be the first time in nearly seven years that the British title will be contested on terrestrial television for the first time in nearly seven years. "I'm delighted to bring the British Heavyweight Championship back to television, free-to-air," Mick Hennessy said of the show, where it will be seen by the largest viewing audience possible due to its tremendous reach and exposure. I can't believe that it will be almost seven years since the British Heavyweight Championship was last seen on free-to-air in the United Kingdom on Channel 5. Fury got the contest going by throwing jabs and right hands around the ring. In round 3, the movement seemed to be evicted Sexton. In rounds 4 and 5, Fury knocked Sexton down twice in the fight, eventually losing him twice. Fury secured the British title by TKO in round 5; referee Terry O'Connor called the match off after Fury knocked Sexton down with a right hand in round 5. Sexton got back to his feet, but the referee stopped it. At 2.9 million viewers, the drama reached its high point.

In December 2019, Sexton resigned from boxing.
