Career
Saira Banu was the niece of Naseem Banu, a stage and film actress. Sultan Ahmed (1939-2016), who was five years older than her, was her sister.
Banu was 16 years old in 1960 when she first started working in Hindi films for the first time. She said in a program that she had basic skills and no dancing experience. Her peers were all classically trained, which was why she was not drafted in the top league. Banu began taking Kathak and Bharata Natyam lessons with success, and she trained herself professionally. She soon became a dancer, and her films showed more of her dancing.
Banu made her acting debut in the 1961 film Junglee, for which she received her first Filmfare award as Best Actress. "Yaahoo!!! Mohammed Rafi's Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe" was a huge success. Junglee was written by Aghajani Kashmeri (aka Kashmiri and Agha Jani), who also aided her in Urdu dialogue delivery, considering his interest in Urdu literature and poetry from Lucknow. Junglee was a young actress at the beginning of her career as a star. Her image was that of a romantic heroine, and she appeared in a number of love stories. She appeared in one more film opposite her first hero, Shammi Kapoor, Bluff Master, directed by Manmohan Desai. Jhuk Gaya Aasman and Aayi Milan Ki Bela, and Rajendra Kumar's Aayi Milan Ki Bela, as well as April Fool, Aao Pyaar Karen and Shagird's Joy Mukherjee were two of her best films during this period. Banu performed Pyar Mohabbat with Dev Anand.
Aman (1967), the opposite Rajendra Kumar, was the first woman to be released after her marriage. She appeared in three films with Manoj Kumar, Shaadi, Purab Aur Paschim, and Balidan. In 1968, Cult film Padosan, opposite Sunil Dutt, catapulted her to the top league, and she continued to play the heroine for many years after that. Victoria No. 434 no. 77. Navin Nischol's 203 is her most popular show. With her husband, she appeared in three films: Gopi, Sagina, and Bairaag. Only Gopi was profitable at the box office. Jwar Bhata, Aadmi Aur Insaan, Resham Ki Dori, Pocket Maar, International Crook and Chaitali were among the five people affected by the disaster, out of which 5 were Superhit.
In an interview, she confessed to regreting the opportunity to work with Rajesh Khanna. "I had been supposed to work with him in Choti Bahu (1971), but I couldn't because I was ill." I worked with him for two days and discovered that he was both charming, humble, and shy." In super hit films Zameer and Hera Pheri, she was paired with Vinod Khanna in hit movie Aarop and Amitabh Bachchan. Nehle Pe Dehla, produced by Sunil Dutt in 1976, was her last commercial success. She drew the curtains on her career as a heroine, with a slew of flops, including Daaman Aur Aag, Mounto, and Koi Jeeta Koi Haara, as well as films such as Faisla, Mera Valiant Geeta Ki Kasam, and Aarambh on hold.
She has received three Filmfare awards for Best Actress: Shagird (1967), Diwana (1968), and Sagina (1974). Despite Banu's success, several commentators bemoaned that she "made it on glamour, not on talent." In reaction to the criticism, she remarked in a 1973 interview: 'It's been criticized ever since.
Banu appeared in a cameo opposite her husband in Duniya (1984), where the song "Teri meri zindagi" became extremely popular. Faisla was eventually released in 1988 and is her last film.
