As he entered secondary school, he continued participating in school plays. Nevertheless, he had never performed properly before the Harry Potter series. He left school at sixteen to concentrate on his acting career, citing that he "didn't really like school that much."

Career
Casting began in 1999 for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, J. K. Rowling's best-selling book. Rowling demanded that the actors be British, and she helped Susie Figgis and director Chris Columbus with casting the roles. Grint, a bookworm, auditioned for the role of Ron Weasley, one of Harry Potter's closest friends at Hogwarts. After seeing a Newsround article about the open casting, he sent in a video of himself rapping about how he wished to be cast, and the casting team arranged a meeting with him. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and an 11-year-old Grint were selected to perform Harry, Hermione Granger, and Ron on August 8, 2000. Grint is the oldest member of the trio. Grint's debut screen appearance was in 2001 after the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It was the year's highest-grossing film, smashing records for opening-day sales and opening-weekend takings. It's second most commercially profitable entry in the series, with a total of US$974 million in its theatrical run. It was generally well-received, with mainly positive feedback. However, a number of commentators found that the adaption's faithfulness to the novel had both its highest and worst qualities. Grint received a Satellite Award in the category of Outstanding New Talent and Young Artist Award for Most Promising Young Newcomer.
Grint appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) a year later. It attracted positive reviews and critics generally adored the lead actors' performances. Both Los Angeles Times and New York Magazine reported that Grint and his peers had matured between films, with the former claiming that Grint had become "more proficient" and missing "the amateurish ardour" in Philosopher's Stone. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) were released in the United Kingdom on May 31. All three of the film's lead characters appear to be on the verge of adolescence, "and although they appear more capable and fearless than ever," the dangers they face seem to be bigger and more vulnerable." Alfonso Cuarón took over direction for Prisoner of Azkaban, the lowest-grossing Harry Potter film with US$795 million in revenues. Nevertheless, it was the second highest-grossing film of 2004, after Shrek 2.
Grint reprised his role in the series's fourth film – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – in 2005. Unlike previous films, the adaptation explored romantic elements and contained more humour. All three lead actors singled out humour as a reason for the film's success in 2005. It was directed by Mike Newell, who Grint described as "very loud and not afraid to swear at you," but it was actually cool." Goblet of Fire is one of the series' best-reviewed instalments, and it is praised for its characters' longevity and sophistication, darker and more complicated plotline, and the quality of the screenplay and lead actors' performances.
In 2007, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth film in the Harry Potter series, was released in cinemas. A huge financial success, it brought in a record opening-week gross of US$394 million, which was a record for worldwide beginning-week sales of Spider-Man 3. It was directed by David Yates, a young film producer who produced all of the subsequent Potter films. Grint said the laid-back director was "very fine" and kept the job fresh, but the content was not always accurate. In front of Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, Grint and his Harry Potter co-stars left imprints of their hands, feet, and wands.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the series's sixth instalment, was announced on July 15, 2009, and record-breaking box office figures were set. Its inaugural run at US$933 million in ticket sales. It's also one of the most highly regarded Harry Potter films, with critics praising its "emotionally touching" story, direction, cinematography, graphic design, and music. In this book, Grint portrayed a change in Ron, pointing out that his once fragile, often overshadowed person began to feel more stable, and that he even began to show a darker side. It was amusing to depict a more emotional Ron. Grint's work received three awards, one of which was named in honor of the German magazine Bravo in 2009, with one winning—the Otto Award.
Despite the previous films' success, the franchise's future was put into doubt when the three main actors had reservations about joining the final two films. However, Grint decided to return for the last instalments by March 2007. The final book was split into two films, shot back-to-back, with filming wrapping in June 2010. Grint said, "I mean it literally has been my childhood," grint said, and it was then reduced to just one random scene, with us jumping through a fireplace, and then it was over. It's very strange. It was all over, just like that. It was really difficult for all of us, knowing that we're never going to do this again."
Part 1 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows were published in November and gross over US$950 million. It set multiple box office records and received mainly favorable feedback. Grint's portrayal of Ron has earned him critical praise once more. Dana Stevens, who was assisting with the conversion of Slate, said the three leads were "terrible." Though he disliked the film, Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal wrote, "Grint has developed to be a savvy actor who knows the value of a slow burn." However, writer Lou Lumenick of the New York Post found that both Grint and Radcliffe had grown weary of portraying the characters and reacted to it in their performances. Grint's appearances earned him nominations from the MTV Movie Awards and National Movie Awards for Best Fight and Performance of the Year in 2011. For the seventh time in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, the final Harry Potter instalment, he appeared. It jumped from where the previous film ended and involved a lot of drama, though Part 1 was more focused on character development. Grint and the film were both critically acclaimed: "Who could have predicted that Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson would be good actors?" Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post wrote, "Who might have guessed that they'd be good actors." Several box office hits were broken, including the best midnight premiere, the biggest first-day opening, and the biggest opening week. Part 2 of Deathly Hallows became the fourth highest-grossing film of all time. On July 7, 2011 in London, Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling spoke at the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2! Grint was one of seven Harry Potter film series cast members on "The Big Seven," according to her; she, Emma Watson, Tom Felton, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, and Bonnie Wright.
Grint appeared in his first non-Harry Potter film, Thunderpants, based on Patrick (played by Bruce Cook), who earns him the position of astronaut. Grint played Alan, an anosmic boy who is Patrick's only friend, in this film. Critics and audiences generally dismissed it. Most of the commentators who did not pay attention to it were dissatisfied, with one saying: "This film should be shown in jails so prisoners have a legitimate excuse not to return." Grint appeared in Driving Lessons, a comedy drama that was released in 2006, starring Julie Walters. Critics generally dismissed the film, but his portrayal of an oppressed teenage boy was applauded. "Grint, on the other hand, is a revelation," Andre Soares, Alt Film Guide's, wrote. . . [He] combines aninnate naturalness with personal charisma to make a potentially traumatic Christian convert into a likable, if not a little uncomfortable young man."
Grint would appear in the drama film Cherrybomb, starring Robert Sheehan and Kimberley Nixon, in July 2008. Grint found shooting this film very different from Harry Potter's because he had to adjust to doing a dozen scenes per day. Grint's character—Malachy, a Belfast worker—goes to great lengths to impress his boss's daughter, with whom he is infatuated. He appeared in this film, as well as his forthcoming one, in which he played violent characters. Despite premiering at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival, the film was initially unable to find a distributor. Grint's fans' online campaign was credited with helping to obtain a distribution deal in the United Kingdom in 2010.
Jonathan Lynn starred Grint in Wild Target, a 2010 comedy drama in which he appeared with Emily Blunt and Bill Nighy. It was a remake of the 1993 French film Cible Emouvante made on a very modest budget of US$8 million. It was a commercial failure, earning only US$3.4 million, and it received mostly critical feedback in the media, who chastised it for mocking the original film and wasting its cast's comedic potential. However, Grint received some positive feedback: "It's nice to see Rupert Grint do well in a role other than Ron Weasley's, and it's clear that he has a future ahead of him."
Grint made a cameo appearance on BBC comedy show Come Fly with Me, starring comedy duo Matt Lucas and David Walliams (Little Britain) in January 2011. Principal photography began in April, and the film, which was shot on location, was released in 2012. It is based on a true story that occurred on the 27th of April 1940, when German Luftwaffe pilot Horst Schopis' bomber was shot down by a Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Blackburn Skua and crashed at Grotli, which later crashed-landed. During a cold winter there, the several German and British crews found protection by chance.
Grint did a photo shoot in Los Angeles with his friend and Harry Potter co-star Tom Felton during the fashion label Band of Outsiders' fall/winter series. Grint would appear in the film version of Postman Pat starring David Tennant, Stephen Mangan, and Jim Broadbent; it was announced in May 2014 that it would be released in September 2011. The "Visit Britain" TV commercial, starring Grint, Michelle Dockery, and Stephen Fry, was released in March 2012, promoting holidaying in the United Kingdom. Grint was cast alongside Chlo Grace Moretz in The Drummer, a biopic film about drummer Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys, later this month. On that day, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that filming would begin in California and Savannah, Georgia, on June 15, 2012.
Grint carried the 2012 London Olympic torch during the Olympic Torch Relay, which was part of the London 2012 Summer Olympics. He told the BBC News that it was an "overwhelming" experience that he "wanted to recall forever" and that "it was truly overwhelming." It's just such a privilege to be a part of this. I'm really proud." We Are Aliens, a 25-minute 3D planetarium Fulldome film about the possibility of other intelligent life in the universe, was narrated by a narrator in October 2012.
Grint will appear in a CBS television pilot called Super Clyde on February 13, 2013, according to The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed. It was not set up as a series. Grint will make his stage debut in Jez Butterworth's second run of Jez Butterworth's black comedy Mojo in July 2013, with Grint playing Sweets, a hood that "pops amphetamines like Smarties," and "does a double act of comedic menace." Brendan Coyle, Ben Whishaw, and Daniel Mays were among the plays based on true events and ran from 26 October 2013 to 8 February 2014 at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London.
