Early life
She was born in Bedford. A domestic fire killed her father, Flight Lieutenant Clement Swann, age 26, and a seven-month-old sister. She was born in Scotland and Surrey. Anne Lawrence, the niece of Sir William Lawrence, 3rd Baronet's daughter, settled near Guildford, Surrey, and Rose studied at Guildford College of Art, where she obtained a BA in Fine Art. After starting at Nell's restaurant in New York City, she returned to London and continued her work as a professional chef.
Personal life
She married Michael Selby Gray, either 1961 or 1962. They had a son, Ossian, and two daughters, Hester and Lucy, but their marriage ended in divorce. Dante MacIlwaine Gray (born 1973), by her partner David Robin MacIlwaine, to whom she was married from 2004 to her death, she had a son, Dante MacIlwaine Gray (born 1973). They lived in Tuscany, where Rose first developed an interest in Italian food.
