He had expressed an interest in representing Great Britain as opposed to Ireland in 2012. However, in January 2013, he was considering playing for Britain or Ireland, or not playing at all: "I just happen to be from where we're from." I believe you are from Northern Ireland, and that being from Northern Ireland, you have a link to Ireland and a link to the United Kingdom. I'd play for Northern Ireland if I could and there was a Northern Irish team. Play for one or the other – or not play at all because I might offended too many people.' In 2014, he then elected Ireland to represent Ireland.

McIlroy was born in County Down, about 20 minutes from Belfast, and lived near Moneyreagh village. A custom-made fitness center and a scaled-down football pitch were on the property around his house. He took the UBS Hong Kong Open by two strokes in December 2011.

During the European Tour's desert swing at the end of January, McIlroy's first tournament of the year was at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. Because of its high-profile field, including Tiger Woods, Luke Donald, and Lee Westwood, the tournament was in the spotlight. During the first two days of the marquee team, McIlroy worked with Woods and Donald. McIlroy fired rounds of 67-72-68 to begin round 4 in joint 3rd place, behind joint leaders Robert Rock and Tiger Woods. McIlroy's runner-up finish moved him to the top of the world's top rankings while also putting him at the top of the Race to Dubai leaderboard.

McIlroy returned to form this week, winning the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and claiming the No. 1 spot in the world rankings. After rounds of 66-66, he began his fourth round in first place at 11-under-par, ahead of a chasing pack dominated by Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood, and Keegan Bradley. McIlroy led by three strokes in the final round and finished the field with a flawless, bogey-free 66. McIlroy's victory at 22 years old made him the youngest major champion since Seve Ballesteros won the 1980 Masters Tournament. McIlroy's win also boosted him to the world's top-one position.

In the FedEx Cup standings, McIlroy came in third place in the regular season. He finished fourth in the standings at The Barclays, the first of four playoff tournaments, placing him fourth. On the 72nd hole, McIlroy took the 2013 Emirates Australian Open for the 72nd time. He defeated Australian Adam Scott by a single stroke.
