Roman Josi (born 1 June 1990) is a Swiss professional ice hockey defenceman who currently serves as captain of the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Early life

Roman Josi was born in Bern, Switzerland, on June 1, 1990, as the second son of parents Doris and Peter Josi. He grew up in an athletic household; his mother is a former national team swimmer and his father competed in competitive soccer. Before committing to ice hockey at the age of 10, Josi played both soccer and hockey as a youth. Both his father and older brother are also interested in ice hockey; Yannic competed with HC Bern Altstadt in SwissDiv3; Peter serves on the Board of Directors for SC Bern. He is a sponsor of BSC Young Boys, his hometown football team.

Personal life

On June 20th, 2019, Josi married Ellie Ottaway, a model and singer, on June 20th, 2019. On February 13, 2021, they welcomed their first child, Luca James Josi.

Playing career

Josi began with SC Bern in 2006. In the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, he was chosen by the Nashville Predators in the second round, 38th overall. He was regarded as one of the best Swiss prospects in the draft.

After playing for Bern's NLB team for the previous two seasons, Josi became a full member during the 2007–08 season. In 2010, Josi won the National League A championship.

Josi joined the Predators' team during the 2010–11 season, after spending the entire year with the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League.

On December 10, 2011 against the Anaheim Ducks' Dan Ellis, Josi scored his first NHL goal.

Due to the NHL lockout, he began the 2012-2013 season with his youth team, SC Bern. He appeared alongside NHL players John Tavares and Mark Streit. Josi returned to play with the Predators in overtime, beating the Dallas Stars on February 25, 2013.

Josi had a good year during the 2014–15 season, ranked fifth among defensemen in scoring and finishing with a high of 55 points. Josi finished in the top five for the Norris Trophy vote at the end of the season.

Josi was selected to participate in the 2016 NHL All-Star Game with Pekka Rinne, Shea Weber, and James Neal during the 2015-16 season. He also placed in the top ten for the Norris Trophy vote.

Josi and James Neal were both chosen as an alternate captain during the 2016-17 season. Josi's defensive abilities were vital in the Predators' 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs run. Despite being put on long-term injury reserve in January, he ended the season with 12 goals and 49 points.

On September 19, 2017, Josi was the sixth captain in Predators history before the 2017–18 season.

Josi signed an eight-year, $72.472 million contract extension with the Predators on October 29, 2019.

Josi has also been very active in the community as the Predators' captain. He has worked with the Best Buddies charity in Nashville, giving access to every game for local children with special needs. Josi is also attending the Best Buddies prom and gala in Nashville with these boys.

In 2020, he received the James Norris Memorial Trophy, becoming the first Predators player and the first Swiss to win the award.

Josi had three assists while 87 points down in 2022, beating Paul Kariya's previous record (85 in 2005-06) to win the Predators single season points leader in a 3–2 victory over the Ottawa Senators on April 7, 2022. He finished the 2021–22 season with 96 points, becoming the first defenseman to score 90 points in a single season since Ray Bourque in 1993–94. For his contributions, he was a finalist for the Norris Trophy for the first time and was named by the NHL Players' Association as the league's Most Valuable Player. He came in second place in Norris voting, despite receiving the most first place votes, and also placed sixth in the Hart Memorial Trophy voting.
