Roscoe "Rocky" Carroll (born July 8, 1963) is an American actor and producer.

He is best known for his appearances on the FOX comedy-drama Roc (1991-1994) as Dr. Joey Emerson.

Keith Wilkes on the CBS medical drama Chicago Hope, and as NCIS Director Leon Vance on the CBS drama NCIS and its spinoffs Los Angeles and New Orleans.

He appeared in the 1995 thriller film Crimson Tide.

Early life

Carroll was born Roscoe Carroll in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 8, 1963. His acting career is rooted in theater. Carroll graduated from Cincinnati, Ohio, at the School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) in 1981. He attended the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University in St. Louis, where he obtained a B.F.A. The degree. Carroll would later earn an honorary degree from his alma mater in 2009. Carroll, a 1968 graduate, wanted to try the waters by moving to New York City, the heart of the theater district. By appearing in Joe Papp's "Shapepeare on Broadway" film, he introduced several young children to William Shakespeare's works.

Personal life

In 1996, Carroll married Gabrielle Bullock. Elissa is their one child.

Career

Carroll helped to open doors for actors of color by playing non-traditional roles in Shakespeare dramas that were rarely represented by Black actors. Carroll was introduced to August Wilson's work in 1987. For Wilson's critically acclaimed story The Piano Lesson, the up-and-coming and talented young actor was able to reprise his role. Carroll not only received a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, but also received a Tony and Drama Desk nomination.

Joey Emerson, the FOX comedy-drama Roc, is best known for portraying ne'er-do-well musician Joey Emerson. In addition, he appeared in the television series Chicago Hope as Dr. Keith Wilkes. Carroll has appeared in several other television shows, including The Agency, Boston Family Law, The West Wing, Law & Order, The Game, ER, and Grey's Anatomy. Carroll has appeared in numerous Hollywood films, including Born on July, The Ladies Man, Crimson Tide, The Great White Hype, The Great White Hype, The Prelude to a Kiss, The Chase, Best Laid Plans, and Yes Man.

Carroll appeared as Assistant Director Leon Vance in the CBS drama NCIS' fifth season. He had been reunited with his Chicago Hope coworkers Mark Harmon and Lauren Holly in doing so. Following Jenny Shepard's death (played by Holly), his character became the new director of NCIS and swapped Holly in the main cast. In the NCIS spin-offs Los Angeles and New Orleans, he has also appeared as Vance.
